Thanks, Bruce!
Now can you assemble it for me! :>)
We'll have to watch holiday sales closely with this one.
You really can't run any charts with this one because it just started trading again in June.
I know a woman who used to work for K-Mart as a buyer.
She now works for Keebler.
She thought is was a joke too, when K-Mart started trading again at $15 as K-Mart Holdings.
Yeah, right, like it's a different company.
You can put a dress on a dog, but it's still a dog (no offence, Augie :>)
EDIT: Remember FAO Schwartz (SP?)
Only one.
To get DEEEEEP down in your pocket!
LOL! That just maybe the funniest thing I've ever encountered on I-Hub.
You crack me up, Augie.
Funniest damn dog I know!
Edit: I just went back and looked at that again.
That's funny as hell! Where do you come up with these thing.
That one is just "pure genius"!
Has anyone thought of shorting K-Mart?
I don't think they're going to make it.
When they emerged from bankrupcy, that piece of crap was re-issued at around $15 or so a share.
It closed today @$29.40 (KMRT)
Excert from Yahoo Finance:
"Kmart's limiting its markdowns and is trying to drive what it calls "profitable sales," a seemingly novel concept for the retailer. Customers used to seeing everything at Kmart as a Bluelight Special are surprised to find the company offering up lots more full-price merchandise. It looks like shoppers aren't yet buying into Kmart's new image, though, judging by the same-store sales results. Still, holding the line on pricing allowed Kmart to produce a profit for the month of November."
In my opinion, if K-Mart is trying to improve their image, they need a name change.
I think there's a stigma attached to K-Mart : Junk.
Even though they have a few name brands such as Joe Boxer and Martha Stewart (I can't stand her and would never buy any of her crap. But hey, that's just my opinion) people still think "cheap" when they go to K-Mart and are reluctant to spend money unless they feel they are "stealing" the merchandise.
I think it could make a good short.
Opinions, anyone?
Scott
Cable vs DSL
Excuse my ignorance here, but can someone tell me which one is faster?
I thought cable was, but now I'm not so sure. I have Time-Warner RoadRunner, by the way.
With DSL, don't you have to have a phone-line?
I no longer have a "wired" phone, only cellular. DSL won't work for me, will it?
(I told you I'd be here often. And it not even 2004, yet!)
I run RegClean at least once a day.
I defrag once in a while.
I think my biggest problem is this HP piece of crap won't take anymore than 512MB RAM. I have it maxed out.
Oh well, I only paid $400 (new) for it 2 years ago. However, at the time, I didn't realize I couldn't "up-grade" the RAM.
The main reason I want to build a computer is, I want 3-4 gigs RAM and , either dual processors or the "hyper-threading technology".
I process a lot of digital photo files, sometimes over 100 at a time, and each one is over 18MB. Plus, Photoshop runs slow now. I have a P4 1.6 ghz processor. A friend of mine has a P4 2.5 ghz and his is noticably faster when we process photos on his machine. He has only 512MB as well.
Thanks again Bruce.
I have a feeling I'll be here often in 2004.
"Try this first. Download Ace Utilities and run it."
What about RegCleaner?
Are you familiar with it?
How does it compare to Ace Utilities?
Thanks, Bruce.
Boy, I bet the sky's falling over at Z's.
I'd take a look over there, but I don't want to get urinated on.
Not into that, you know.
I didn't know IHub allowed porn. How DO they do it over there?:*)
"You seem to be formatting an awful lot"
Hi Bruce,
Wow, this is a timely thread.
I've been wanting to re-format this computer for a while now and yesterday I saw your post about this new thread.
I re-formatted my Sony 5 times because one of my children were using it and "messed it up". After the re-formatting, it still has the same problem after installing certain software. So, I had to re-format until it "worked". The Sony works great, now that I re-formatted. I figured the HP would, too.
Is my situation common for all computers, or does this pertain only to HP?
I hate HP right now. They don't send recovery disc with their computers. They have "recovery system" on a hidden partition. The "recovery system" never gave me the opportunity to chose which hard d rive to re-format. I just can't believe it.
The recovery system is supposed to re-store the computer back to how it was when it was "brand new". I just don't understand why it would re-format the slave drive.
Bruce, I'm glad you started this thread because I have been planning to build a computer sometime in 2004 and I will have lots of questions.
Thanks again,
Scott
P.S. Sorry for the long winded post, and letting me vent some anger here.
Thanks, Augie.
I'm really screwed. After I re-formatted, I tried it 2 more times because I thought it wasn't working properly. THEN, I discovered what had happened. And, the recovery has installed all the original software (that came on the Master hard drive when it was new)onto the SLAVE hard drive.
I just can't believed this happened.
I've re-formatted my SONY VIAO 5 times. It has one hard drive that's divided into two particions: C & F. F drive was never touched. No problems.
But NO, HP can't be so simple.
I was warned not to buy an HP.
Oh well, at least no clients data was lost. Only personal photos. Many hadn't been burned to a CD yet.
Here's my advice to everyone: Get a USB 2.0 or Firewire External hard drive to back up your file and UN-PLUG THE DAMN THING WHEN RE-FORMATTING YOUR MASTER DRIVE.
Oh well, live and learn, I guess.
I'M F#%@ed! I need help, please.
I just backed-up my hard drive to my slave drive.
I went to re-format my drive which contains my op-system (XP).
Well, after the re-formatting, my hard drive was the same as before the re-formating.
However, on closer examination, MY SLAVE DRIVE HAS BEEN WIPED OUT instead of my main drive with XP.
The goddamn HP System Recovery application never gave me the option of which drive to re-format. So naturally, I assume my master drive with the operating system is going to be re-formatted.
BUT NO! MY SLAVE DRIVE IS WIPED CLEAN OF ALL THE FILES AND PROGRAMS I NEED!
Is there a way to do a re-store on the slave drive? Or are my files lost for good?
Thanks for letting me vent and for any help youi may provide.
In case it matters, I have an HP Pavilion 7905 running XP Home version.
Thanks again,
Scott
"It is good to have a disruptive person around from time to time."
Geez, if that's what you want, why not invite Softechie?
There's a real piece of.. er.. work.
"Maybe you could get him to come over to this thread....:)"
I wouldn't do that to you!
Oh, you mean for entertainment's sake?
Well, maybe after hours, just for a laugh or two! :>)

He's about 3 years too soon.
I must be doing something right. I had AMCC before you mentioned it. I like this stock a lot.
I bought SCMR shortly after you mentioned it. I'm beginning to really like it, too.
How about AMCC and SCMR?
Thanks mjk & Wahz. eom.
mjk,
Do think JDSU can reach it's all time high again, before this "echo bubble" burst?
Scott
Like I've said before, there's more to MSFT than Windows.
The following is from dpReview.com
(Wahz, I hope you don't mind I posted this to you. It was meant for no one in particular.)

Microsoft's FAT charges
Thursday, 4 December 2003 14:10 GMT < Prev Next >
Microsoft will soon be charging manufacturers of flash memory card devices and those which use them $0.25 per unit or up to $250,000 to use the FAT filesystem. For those who are unaware the FAT file system was developed by Microsoft back in 1976 and has become the standard file system for all digital still cameras. Microsoft owns patents to the FAT File System but for many years hasn't even hinted that it may one day decide to charge for it. These new licenses appear to come into effect immediately and specifically make mention of 'compact flash memory cards' and 'portable digital still cameras'. What a great way for Microsoft to cash in on the most popular consumer products (as if they don't make enough money already).
Phil: Surely flash memory manufacturers can get around this by simply not pre-formatting cards?
Press Release:
FAT File System Technology and Patent License
December 3, 2003
Most operating systems store computer files by dividing the file into smaller pieces and storing those pieces in separate clusters of a hard disk, floppy disk, or flash memory card. The FAT file system allows an operating system to keep track of the location and sequence of each piece of a file, and also allows the operating system to identify which clusters are unassigned and available for new files. When a computer user wants to read a file, the FAT file system also reassembles each piece of the file into one unit for viewing.
The first FAT file system was developed by Microsoft in 1976. That system was based on the BASIC programming language and allowed programs and data to be stored on a floppy disk. Since that time, the FAT file system has been improved upon multiple times to take advantage of advances in computer technology, and to further refine and enrich the FAT file system itself.
Today, the FAT File system has become the ubiquitous format used for interchange of media between computers, and, since the advent of inexpensive, removable flash memory, also between digital devices. The FAT file system is now supported by a wide variety of operating systems running on all sizes of computers, from servers to personal digital assistants. In addition, many digital devices such as still and video cameras, audio recorders, video game systems, scanners, and printers make use of FAT file system technology.
Microsoft is offering to license its FAT file system specification and associated intellectual property. With this license, other companies have the opportunity to standardize the FAT file system implementation in their products, and to improve file system compatibility across a range of computing and consumer electronics devices.
If you are interested in obtaining a license, please contact our Intellectual Property and Licensing Group at fatspec@microsoft.com for more information.
Pricing and Licensing
Microsoft offers a commercially reasonable, nonexclusive license so that other companies can use the FAT file system in their own products. Currently, Microsoft offers two specific types of licenses:
A license for removable solid state media manufacturers to preformat the media, such as compact flash memory cards, to the Microsoft FAT file system format, and to preload data onto such preformatted media using the Microsoft FAT file system format. Pricing for this license is US$0.25 per unit with a cap on total royalties of $250,000 per manufacturer.
A license for manufacturers of certain consumer electronics devices. Pricing for this license is US$0.25 per unit for each of the following types of devices that use removable solid state media to store data: portable digital still cameras; portable digital video cameras; portable digital still/video cameras; portable digital audio players; portable digital video players; portable digital audio/video players; multifunction printers; electronic photo frames; electronic musical instruments; and standard televisions. Pricing for this license is US$0.25 per unit with a cap on total royalties of $250,000 per licensee. Pricing for other device types can be negotiated with Microsoft.
Microsoft's FAT file system license offers limited rights to issued and pending Microsoft patents on FAT file system technology, as well as rights to implement the Microsoft FAT file system specification. In order to ensure interoperability between the licensed media and devices and Microsoft® Windows®-based personal computers and to improve consumer experience, the license requires that licensees' FAT file system implementations in the licensed media and devices be fully compliant with certain required portions of the Microsoft FAT file system specification. To help licensees implement the FAT file system, Microsoft will also provide certain reference source code and test specifications as part of the licensing package in both licenses.
In some cases, companies may wish to negotiate broader or narrower rights than the standard Microsoft license for FAT file systems. In this case, pricing may vary. Microsoft remains flexible to adjust terms to reflect crosslicensing, unit volume, version limitation, geographic scope, and other considerations.
FAT File System–Related Patents
The FAT file system licensing program includes rights to a number of U.S. Patents, including:
U.S. Patent #5,579,517
U.S. Patent #5,745,902
U.S. Patent #5,758,352
U.S. Patent #6,286,013
In addition, the FAT file system licensing package includes rights to FAT file system innovations for which Microsoft has filed a claim for a patent that the U.S. Patent Office has not yet granted. This licensing program also provides licensees rights to Microsoft FAT file system issued and pending patents outside the United States, and to the Microsoft FAT file system specification and certain test specifications.
NGEN might make a good "short" for a day-trade tomorrow.
What do you think?
"...not a 2 minute z trade"
LOL! I hear ya!
"For example I want to add a nano tech play,..."
Such as...?
Do you mean something like ADOT?
4-1 reverse split. I just found it.
WoW, I thought they had a reverse split recently.
Oh well, DJ ThinkEquity starts Interwoven at overweight.
WAHZ- IWOV up over 300%?
Yahoo states the symbol has changed to IWOVD , yet there is no news (and nothing comes up with the IWOV symbol).
It looks like another reverse split.
Do you know anything?
Anyone know anything?
Thanks,
Scott
Thanks, Wahz. eom.
"...but I think it will act like a springboard."
Do you think this will take us through 2100?
So you're waiting a few days before buying?
Don't options expire NEXT Friday?
You're welcome, Rod. eom.
"WiFi is basically just another form of an ethernet card."
That card is useless without software to run it.
Didn't Msft develope (or own) the fisrt wifi standard 802.11b?
A recent interview I saw or read with Gates, he said Msft expects to be a big player in WiFi.
All I'm saying to people is, don't get hung up looking at Msft as only Windows or Office. There's more there than that.
I like Msft, I've never owned it, but I watch the stock. It's in a narrow trading range and it's been there for a while.
I personaly don't like the stock now because I feel there's better stocks to make money on now. Like Scon (sold today, looking to re-enter on a pull back), AMCC (curently hold), and others on Wahz list.
( I must be doing something right: I had AMCC, Scon and Manu before Wahz listed them).
I may be biased, since I'm not a Microsoft or Gates basher.
Later: Heading to Nebraska for the weekend, with a stop in Chicago Saturday night.
Kingston Mines, here we come!
Let's not foget about WiFi.
MSFT expects to be a HUGH player there.
There's more to MSFT than just Windows and Office.
Thanks for keeping us informed. eom
Thanks for posting those nice charts, Iown quite a few of those stock.
Here's a couple of MilkBones for you, enjoy!
Oh, and you can pee on my fire hydrant anytime you like!
Are you still holding MACR?
I am. I'm looking to move on, though.
"...it doesn't mean I will listen to the signal."
Uh Oh, Wahz. You always get burned when you do that.
Maybe Wahz should change the name of the list to
"18 and some NUTS"!
Thanks Bull.
That's a lot of info you put together.
It's much appreciated by myself, as well as others here, I'm sure.
Thanks again.
Thanks again, Bull. I have those charts bookmarked. They'll come in handy!
Bull, what's the IGN? Nice charts, by the way.
