Speaking of wordplay enthusiats...
I've been editing my tagline (one liners for inclusion in signature lines in messages) database for the express purpose of making the database search friendly online. There is even talk of integrating it with certain message board posting systems.
If you love this kid of bumper sticker humor and wordplay it should be a real treat.
BTW, did I mention the database contains almost 500,000 taglines?

Yes I do have central air,
The House is well shaded and properly weather stripped and insulated.
What's funny to me is that prior to the `40's there were no air conditioners in homes here, but if you visit some of the houses built in the days before AC you find they are remarkably comfortable, even in July and August. I know why but won't go into it here. Maybe I'll explain it over on my board this weekend (it is rather involved). While I'm at it I'll explain why those typical NE houses are so good in cold weather but not much help for this heat and humidity.

BOP has considerable options knowledge as well.
Contrary to popular myth BOP doesn't know everything! But I will share what I do know as best I can. And I am always interested in what other traders (options and otherwise) have to share...how else do you think I maintain my "considerable options knowledge". <G>>

I must disagree with you and say that the uptrend should continue. I reserve the right to change my mind at a moments notice though. LOLOL!
If we always were in agreement it wouldn't be as much fun. There is a lot of reason to be optimistic, but I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that the reverse Head & Shoulders pattern seems to have broken down. Also, although the support trendline does have a slight upward bias...it is so slight as to be almost nonexistent. That would make this a descending triangle as opposed to a symmetrical triangle formed in an uptrend. Great thing about the market is this will resolve itself given time and either or both of us could be wrong!
In the meantime let's continue making money and learning how this thing really works!
The Bird of Prey
#board-381
In the interim, selling as it reaches the downtrend line and buying as it reaches the uptrend could prove very profitable if the formation continues to resolve itself.
Although it is wayyy early, my prediction is the triangle will resolve to the downside in about a month with the apex point near 24.5. a retest of the Sept 01 is probable.

Hi Mom!!!!
(Now I feel like a football player on TV!)
Remember, Dragons are not always bad. Most of the time they leave well enough alone. But it is always a good idea to stay on their good side!
I must admit that this new movie is not going to do much PR for the "good" side of Dragons. But at least they got the "HIGHLY INTELLIGENT" part right...and that fire breathing thing of course!
Also, I remember you teaching me a song about a Dragon...before we new it wasn't really about a Dragon at all.
Love you too.

Hi Poet!
Thanks for stopping in and I'm glad you like the decorating! All is going well with me and mine, at least as well as can be expected. I hope you and yours are doing well too.
As I understand it Bob's #1 priority when he returns from vacation is the programming and setup of "message filtering". From what he and I have discussed privately (and publicly) it should be a very robust feature, providing a great deal more functionality and flexibility than just a regular old fashioned "ignore" (or as we called them in the old days "twit filters").
Looking forward to your full time return.

If you interested in the IRS code...
It's on the web at http://www.fourmilab.ch/ustax/www/contents.html
HGTTG Grub
The Bird of Prey
#board-381
Looked for it at IRS.gov have you?
Couldn't find it, eh? Didn't you know the IRS doesn't publish the CODE on the web? That would make it too easy to find credits and loopholes and stuff they don't want you to know.
Even if you search on it's entire heading...
TITLE 26, Subtitle A, CHAPTER 1, Subchapter A, PART IV, Subpart B, Sec. 29
it's not on the IRS site.
Fortunately, you don't have to know everything about the code. the company that is operating the trust has that responsibility. Each quarter they issue the declared royalty and tax credit for the quarter. Each year they supply all shareholders with the documentation necessary to claim the credit. All you have to do if fill out the appropriate line in the 1040(last year line 50) and include a copy of form 8830 (line k) with the information from the company and your good to go.
However, we are fortunate that someone in America dares to publish the IRS code on the net thus making it available for all to see.
http://www.fourmilab.ch/ustax/www/t26-A-1-A-IV-B-29.html
You will note that this section has a provision that essentially ends the credit at the end of 2007. There are bills before Congress that would extend this credit to 2011 and beyond. The Bush administration supports them and so do I.
This Credit encourages the production of alternate sources of energy as well as maximizing the production of natural gas from resources that would not otherwise be used.
That the average investor can benefit from this is just an added bonus.
Add you thought I was just out to make a buck!
If you have/want an electric car check out section 30!
The Bird of Prey
#board-381
Section 29? What the Heck is Section 29?
No, it's not the rowdiest section in your favorite stadium. It's
an obscure part of the Income Tax Code. Before you go screaming
off into the night relax, this is very simple and very easy to
understand. Section 29 creates a tax credit for entities using
alternative fuels or alternative methods of gathering energy.
Keep in mind this is a Credit not a deduction. It will reduce
the tax bill dollar for dollar.
How does this benefit me, you ask? Well, it just so happens that
there are a few publicly trading companies that have set up
special entities (called Royalty Trusts) to take full advantage
of Section 29. These trusts are also publicly traded, which
means the average investor (that's you) can get a tax break just
like the big boys. I know your thinking that the tax benefit
must be too small to be worth the effort…but…you'd be wrong. You
see not only do you get the tax benefit… but also, the trust
must typically pay out a higher royalty payment than
the "normal" stock pays out in dividends. To sum it all up, you
get more cash and a tax credit to boot.
Let me show you a real world example. (Figures are from the
trailing twelve months, future performance may vary)
Dominion Resources (D) is an energy company many of you should
be familiar with. Strong, long term stable track record with a
substantial quarterly dividend. Some of you may even have it in
your portfolio. If so, what follows will certainly give you
pause.
I'd be surprised if many of you have ever heard of the Black
Warrior Trust (DOM). Some Dominion shareholders may even be
surprised to learn it is run by Dominion Resources. But take a
look at this issue (especially if you hold the parent company
stock.
From the latest close:
Dominion Resources
Share price $60.97
Dividend $2.58
Yield ~4.25%
Black Warrior Trust
Share Price $18.48
Dividend $2.30
Yield ~12.50%
Tax Credit ~$0.80
Almost triple the payout, plus a substantial tax credit!
So if you have 100 shares of "D" you'll get a dividend of $258.
Not bad for a $6100 investment.
But, with that same $6100 you can own 300 shares of "DOM" (same
company, just a different structure), get a royalty of $690, a
Tax Credit of $240 and still have $550 cash to invest elsewhere.
These are typical numbers for several of the companies that take
advantage of Section 29. You can participate. It doesn't require
anything special, even the folks at H&R Block know how to enter
it in to your 1040!
You can find these companies by searching for "Royalty Trust" in
most any Search Engine. The returns vary slightly and from time
to time one or another with have its price depressed and you can
get some really astounding returns. If you are investing for
income or looking to add a little punch and diversify your
portfolio, Royalty Trusts Might been worth your while to look
at. Recently my parents had Torch Energy Royalty Trust in their
holdings. During the time they held it they collected more in
Royalties and Tax Credits than they originally paid for the
stock and sold out for almost double the purchase amount. Not
too shabby for a two and a half year hold.
If you have questions I'll be here all week.

Yep!
"Twit filter" it was. Never used it, I much preferred in those days to leave the charred remains of "twits" sitting at their keyboards. Some "twits" even turned over a new leaf and became useful productive members of society.
Have a great vacation. I am very pleased to hear you "getting pumped" about the "message filter" idea. As for it's many uses, I can think of a number of them if you make it work the way I think you're going to (ie filter based on the message as well as/instead of the user). Have a good time with the family next week, come back refreshed and ready and raring to go.

For the #board and the Next "XX" features. Phil's comment on life being complete once the "filter" feature is in place certainly has a special "ring" to it. I am sure though, that we'll always come up with something else we want once that is in place.

Hi Tim,
I'll give it my best shot.
SITE made an offer to "buy back" several of it's note (bond) issues.
Several of the bond holders felt the offers were in violation of the rules set forth in the contracts and several different securities laws. They filed a lawsuit attempting to stop the proposed transaction from going forward.
Yesterday SITE decided to withdraw the offer. They also announced that they are not going to continue making "private offers" to it's "institutional" bondholders as well.
It seems to me that SITE was offering to turn their existing debt into convertible debt. I haven't read anything about this company, but on the surface it appears that the Note holders (at least) felt they were getting the short end of the stick (pun intended). Exchanging their notes (and their leverage) for stock apparently doesn't look like a good idea to them.
I agree with you, this doesn't look good to me either.

I have noticed no significant change in performance during any of the random times I access the site. Any slowdowns have been very minor and short-lived. In contrast at times things have also appeared to get slightly faster, likely the result of BZ's 'tweaks'. Granted, I'm on a DSL not a dial-up.

Got any advice or suggested reading for novice in trading Options?
Absolutely!
"McMillan on Options" and "Options as a Strategic Investment" by Lawrence G. McMillan are not only required reading, but a must have for anyone serious about options investing. I also recommend Scott H. Fullman's, "Options: A Personal Seminar" and "The Complete Option Player" by Kenneth R. Trester.
Lastly, if one is asking the question "What the heck is 'Trading Options'?" (extreme novice) I recommend (with caution) that you pick up a copy of "The Wall Street Money Machine" by Wade Cook. While Mr. Cook, IMNSHO, is more about selling books and seminars than investing. He does do a remarkable job of simplifying option investing strategies and explaining them in easily understood terms. Pick up the book and read chapters 7 through 12.
Note: Next Ibox update will include links to acquire these and several other books on my recommended Investment Reading List.

Just so you know, some of the 'grandfathered members' thought so much of IH that they contributed anyway before they were grandfathered. Obviously there is a great deal of info in the Ibox. I will be expanding on it. I had planned on this months ago but was derailed temporarily. I have a backlog of "articles" suitable for this venue and I expect to begin presenting them in the next few days. BTW, one of the articles is titled

In light of this...
I am revising my previous prediction of IH "topping out" in mid to late June, though it appears that without this recent influx that would have been the case. Just guessing, but is IH on pace for a record day today?
Though I cannot speak for what further gains there might be on the Alexa rankings, nor can we be certain of how long this will last, it does appear that post volume is going to double and perhaps more.
One word of caution...(ok two words)

Problem is, most counties in Florida have laws against beach-walking in swimsuits for people who look like me. The skimpy two-piece with thong seems to offend their sensibilities.
Au contraire, It's not the wearing of such that offends...it's the extremely high probability of said garment suffering a containment breach that causes concern.

Hi Bob!
Noticed the new homepage today. Not too shabby. But it brings to mind a question or two...
What is the benefit to a grandfathered member for becoming a paid subscriber?
How much is a lifetime subscription, for a grandfathered member that made a cash contribution before it was required?

How the Internet Began
In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she had been called Amazon Dot Com.
She said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why doth thou travel far from town to town with thy goods when thou can trade without ever leaving thy tent?"
And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, Dear?"
And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale and they will reply telling you which hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."
Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. The drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever moving from his tent.
But this success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secret himself inside Abraham's drum and was accused of insider trading. And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites, or NERDS for short.
And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to the drum maker, one Brother William of Gates, who bought up every drum company in the land. And indeed did insist on making drums that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.
Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others."
And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or as it came to be known "eBay" he said, "We need a name that reflects what we are,"
and Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators."
"YAHOO", said Abraham.
And that is how it all began. It wasn't Al Gore after all!
The Bird of Prey
Actually...
during the two week period following 3-12-02 IH reached nearly 1100 posts per day. Of course, we had a few nonsense posters posting in excess at that time that have been (thankfully) silent since. You know, the kind of folks that post the same one line post 50-100 times just to get the count up. It also appears that some of the stalkers have dropped off as their victims moved on to other things, leaving them no one to stalk. What's sad is losing those good folks...even if they are few in number.
5 people make 5 posts each day that also generate 5 quality responses each equals 125 posts per day. This would be more than 12% of IH's current posting activity.
BTW, the folks of whom I write about averaged more than 5 posts per day and averaged more than 5 responses to those posts (follow the threads).
The Bird of Prey

BOP
Hi Muell!
The Ignore feature as practiced at SI and RB would not be much of an asset here at IH. However, the User Specific Block I've proposed would prevent flame wars between certain individuals from springing up anywhere on the site.
As a refresher; USB blocks an individual from seeing or posting to another individual and prevents that individual from seeing or posting to the one engaging the USB.
In your case you would not be able to see or post to JM and he would not be able to see or post to you.
At the present time (TMK) IH management is considering making USB available as an Admin tool to deal with situations like yours and JM's.
IMO, this would be an excellent test case for the use and effectiveness of USB.
Perhaps if more IH members will "bend management's arm" about this, incidents like yesterday can become a thing of the past at IH.
Recently found this at the Taglines Galore website http://www.taglinesgalore.com

BOP
...having it all in a room at my house would make me feel that the site is somehow more "vulnerable".
Given the number and "volume" of those that...shall we say don't hold you in high regard, the above is probably prudent on your part.
As I said previously, I've "BTDT", after the second incident I began searching for an alternative, when the third outage occurred we were switched before they could get things back up again at the old ISP. Just a reminder that I am patient until I'm out of patience.
BTW, are we any closer to user selected blocking (aka Ignore)?
The Bird of Prey
Thanks for the ego boost!
I had no trouble understanding where he was going with that post. And I am not familiar in the least with the company to which he was referring.
But I will agree that after two days of repeated attempts to get him to address the issue Matt wanted him to address (without success), that Matt had no choice but to let him go.
OAT, If my ISP went down completely twice in less than six months, I'd be looking for a new ISP!
Been there and done that. Zero outages in 3 years with current ISP. And it was less expensive to boot!

Acceptable Grubs...
As I understand it, the following are acceptable
Any of the "double zero" (triple zero, quadruple zero, etc) numbers.
Any "x of a kind" numbers.
Prime numbers.
any ending in 01 or 99
Any numbers in series (12345 or 6789 for example)
I'd like to see the following added
Any post number the equals PI rounded to that digit, ignoring the decimal place. (3142 or 31416 or 314159)
In many Sci-fi series the ships had numbers assigned (especially in Star Trek) in addition to the ships name
ie. USS Enterprise NCC-1701, USS Reliant NCC-1864
