still beats my tortoise...
Wow- I'm very glad I don't have BIOF in my portfolio <bg>. PEIX actually held up better than expected
Just be glad if you don't have BIOF...LJ
A freeze is basically the same thing as selling a stock. It cost you 0 transactions (Freezes are defensive moves, so they do not cost a transaction), everyone has 4 transactions to start the contest, whether they use them all or not, is up to them. The only things that cost transactions are Unfreezes and Trades.
Now to unfreezes, and unfreeze cost a transaction, basically a freeze is like a cash position, which you can unfreeze for any stock if it qualifies (Over .25, Meets volume requirement, and earnings requirement assuming you have used a wildcard allready, if you have no wildcard then the stock doesn't need to meet the earnings requirement if you see a wildcard you like.)
You have used 1 transaction. So you have 3 left. The Trade deadline which applies for trades/Unfreezes is friday before the market close. So if you want to do a trade/unfreeze of any kind you can do up to 3 of them between now and Friday. Remember you can freeze which is basically just selling a stock right up until the last day, but when it comes to trades/Unfreezes (Offensive moves) Friday is the deadline and you can use up to 3 of them between now and then. I'm not a very good writter, so I hope this is clear. Just my opinion.
Can somebody explain freeze/unfreeze thing for me? :) I'm new to this contest. I froze a stock. So, is it like locking up profits? What will unfreeze do? Should I have sold it instead?
Thanks
I humbly bow to the master picker as ALJJ has proceeded to knock it out of the park with another good quarterly report...LJ

Its a bird, its a plane, its .... 'famous quote'
Oooh, a loss,,,That pig on Green Acres looked like it may have had better prospects than that one now...That bio fuel sector is struggling even with the high gas prices...Who would have thunk it?...LJ
Looks like PEIX disappointed, and knocking me from being a contender for the contest.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=PEIX
This is a pitiful excuse for execution from the best of the best...
And its also shocking to be in the top 25 with over a 3% loss so late in this contest and nothing to be proud of...
Open your purses ladies and help get these figures improving...lol...LJ
PSL TOURNAMENT: FINAL 4: WEEK 1 of 2:

We went from being almost 5% ahead of the W5K to 1 1/2% behind in a single week. I'm assuming most of the reason was AYSI.

Good Job Mike- Surprising, only 17 positive places in the game. I barely got there, lol.
PEIX announces earnings next week- if favorable, I may get a good shot at pushing the envelope <bg>.
Small Cap plays: #board-865
Big Board plays: #board-711
I'm moving closer to first place but I have a long way to go and not much time to do it. It is possible for me to make it but it is not likely.

Now you can freeze right up until the last day. But unfreezes and Trades have to be done before the close on the 15th (Friday). Hope this helps.

VMC PSL 9 Indexes
Commentary: We have numerous indexes to present this contest. So without further ado let me give a brief explanation of them. The The Top 21Index is made up of all stock being picked at least 5 times in the contest, this index is equally weighted. The Top 231 Index, is also equally weighted, and measures the average performance of all the stocks picked in this contest (Our stock universe). The Average Portfolio Return, measure the average performance of the 80 portfolios. These indexes or averages should be familiar to everyone, as I have presented these in past contest(s).
Other indexes to be presented: Average Wildcard Index this index measures the average performance of the 34 wildcards chosen in the contest, this index is equally weighted. Average Non Wildcard Index This index measures the average performance of the 197 non-wildcard entries, and this index is also equally weighted as well. Average Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What This basically means is there are 45 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like TRGD.PK has 4 units because it was picked 4 times in the contest. Average Non Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Non Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What this basically means is there are 435 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like AYSI.OB is weighted much more heavily and has 24 units because it was picked 24 times in the contest. Next, we get to the Average Portfolio (Original) the only difference between this index and the average portfolio return is it excludes the impact of transactions, meaning if no one could make transactions (Which is obviously not the case) this would be the average portfolio return. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Hope you enjoy the info.

UPDATE 1-Aventine Renewable posts 2nd-quarter net loss
Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:08pm EDT
LOS ANGELES, July 31 (Reuters) - Ethanol maker Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings Inc (AVR.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) reported a quarterly net loss on Thursday due to losses on investment securities.
The net loss was $1.9 million, or 5 cents per share, in the second quarter, compared with a profit of $12.6 million, or 30 cents per share, a year ago.
Excluding the loss from auction-rate securities, the company earned 16 cents a share. On that basis, Wall Street analysts, on average, expected earnings of 12 cents per share, according to Reuters Estimates.
Aventine liquidated all of its remaining auction-rate securities during the quarter, the company said, raising $97.1 million in the sale. In February, the company had warned that it may have to delay construction on two new plants because some of its assets had unexpectedly become tied up in auction- rate securities that it could not sell.
Revenue was $601.6 million in the second quarter, compared with $394.9 million last year. The company sold 220.3 million gallons of ethanol during the quarter, compared with 158.7 million last year.
Corn costs during the quarter rose to $5.38 per bushel compared with $3.99 per bushel last year.
Aventine also said it would buy the 21.58 percent of Nebraska Energy LLC it does not already own by issuing 1 million shares of common stock. (Reporting by Nichola Groom; editing by Jeffrey Benkoe and Andre Grenon)

Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. Produces First Million Gallons of Ethanol at Superior Plant
Tuesday August 5, 2:00 pm ET
OMAHA, NE--(MARKET WIRE)--Aug 5, 2008 -- Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. (GPRE - News) (GPRE - News) recently completed production of the first million gallons of ethanol at its new Superior, IA, facility. The plant's anticipated operational capacity is 55 million gallons of ethanol per year. Additionally, the plant is expected to produce 175,000 tons of distiller grains per year. Superior operations were initiated on July 7, 2008.
"Completion of the first million gallons of output is an important milestone for a new ethanol plant," said Wayne Hoovestol, Chief Executive Officer. "During the first several weeks of operation, the equipment and process systems must be carefully tested, calibrated and commissioned. The Superior plant crossed the one million gallon mark on July 29. We expect to reach operational capacity in the near future. The first rail cars of ethanol were loaded on August 1 and the first train loads are scheduled to be shipped out by the end of the week."
The Superior site was selected because of the abundance of corn in the region. Green Plains owns and operates grain elevators at seven locations in the immediate vicinity. The Company's vertically-integrated approach provides strategic advantages in managing risks, reducing costs and increasing efficiencies.
"The Superior ethanol plant and our nearby agribusiness operations complement each other," continued Hoovestol. "The resulting model is integrated and diversified, allowing the Company to avoid certain commodity origination and marketing costs."

This is going to be quite a horserace going into the stretch. With the first place position being ahead by only 11 percent, this could be anybody's race, imo. This could be the most exciting one yet.

Trading back into PDGE now,,,Pretty cool looking new website to highlight the company branding change to FlagshipPDG...
http://www.flagshippdg.com/
Good distribution of company office locations if the weather turns a bit nasty anywhere...
http://www.flagshippdg.com/locations
57 million dollar backlog coming out of the company's first quarter...Company stated that contract starting delays which occured in the first quarter will get started in the 2nd quarter...Could be a big revenue quarter and return to profitability quarter...
.57 book value per share coming out of the 1st quarter so the current selling price could be considered cheap in some econometric terms...Econometric,,,Gee, that's a cool word...
Quarterly results release might come out after this VMC PSL9 contest ends on 08-29...Maybe some contract news could help bounce the price out of its current downtrend...LJ
I bought some INMG last week at $.25
here's my DD write-up...

LOL. I would be and have been a lot less vocal when DOWN.
MSGI:
You could be DOWN 68% and you wouldn't be humble.

Bull markets may rise along a "wall of worry"; bear markets fall along a "slope of hope." -- John Markman, July 24, 2008
You better start a breeding service for that little stock picking monkey while you can get top dollar...
Next contest the little pig snorting pickers might be hot...LJ
If this keeps up I will have to explain how I've kept that dart throwing stock picking monkey in the basement all this time.
If I was up 68+%, I wouldn't be humble.

The winner gets... A year's subscription to IHUB....plus pride in being the #1 performer against a lot of very good stockpickers on the best stockpicking board on the internet. And, they get highlighted on the VMC Champions Board. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=4067
ELIGIBILITY: Solely up to the moderators of this board. Any contestant who is booted from IHUB during the contest is ineligible to win any individual PSLcontest.
A FEW POINTS
All picks will be "blind" picks. By that, it means they will have to be based upon the person's best guess rather than by seeing what others have done. When the picks are made, they will be deleted (hidden) from the board. Once the deadline passes, all picks by each person will be shown in the Ibox.
PSL9 will begin on Monday, May 19th and end on Friday, August 29th. Everyone must have their picks in before May16th at 4PM EST. All beginning prices will be as of the the close on Friday, May16th.
All picks need to be done on this board and not via PM so that we have a record. Also, you can never be sure if whoever you send it to is even around or reading PMs. If you post it on the board, it is permanent and fixed in time.
We will list each person's picks in the Ibox in alphabetical order.
CONTEST RULES
Shown below are all the rules with respect to PSL8. THERE ARE NOSIGNIFICANT RULE CHANGES.
Reminder: The most recent rule change in PSL7 from PSL6 - the methodology to determine initial qualification for a stock on dollar volume will be changed to a more simple formula. Take the Yahoo 3 month average number of shares traded times the closing price on January 10th - allowing one day to make changes if necessary. If that number is over $5,000, it qualifies. If not, it doesn't. Of course, other qualfications still remain - ie 25 cent rule and VMC earningsrule except for wild cards.
Reminder: There was one change made during PSL6. That was an exception to the 15% rule penalty. "However, this rule is NEGATED if the first trade the following day has a dollar volume of at least $50,000 OR if the stock ends above +15% on $100,000 in dollar volume." - see #19 below.
Reminder: These were the changes for PSL6 in case you missed them. Four transactions (trades or unfreezes) plus unlimited freezes** and up to two short positions instead of only one. **sole exception - see #19 (15%rule)
1) Pick exactly 6 stocks that you believe will have the greatest appreciation during the period of the contest.
2) Only cash dividends of over 10% will be adjusted for. Stock dividendsand splits will always be adjusted for.
3) Each stock must be at least 25 cents as of the deadline for making your picks. If one of your stocks is below 25 cents on the close, you will have until midnight (assuming no news) to pick another stock that qualifies. If not, a cash position will be assigned to your portfolio.
4) Stocks must meet VMC earnings & reporting requirements (see explanation immediately below this list) with the exception that one WILD CARD pick will be allowed (see #16 below).
5) A minimum $5,000 average daily dollar volume for the previous three months is required on any original or any new stock. This is calculated as the Yahoo 3-month average shares traded times the closing price of the stock.
6) Foreign stocks are allowed as long as they are trackable on Yahoo. Some foreign stocks have pinky versions and that is ok.
7) One of your 6 original positions can be a cash position.
8) No options or warrants. ETF's are ok.
9) No limit on market cap.
10) It is not required that you disclose whether you own these stocks or not.
11) First come, first serve. All GROUPS of 6 must be unique. If a person already has your exact 6 choices you will need to make at least one substitution. This has not happened so far and is very unlikely.
12) You will receive 4 transactions during the contest. You can use 0,1,2, 3 or all four. That is up to you.
13) All transactions will be done as of the next closing price. If the transaction is done after the close, it will be as of the close of the following market day. There is a one half hour grace period to allow for UNDOING a trade - assuming there is no news involved to either part of the transaction during that half hour. This is because many closing prices are not available until 20minutes after the close.
14) A transaction can be a trade or an unfreeze (just like it sounds). A double down (see below) is also a transaction. All transactions should be done on the PLS7 board - and not via PM.
DOUBLE DOWNS:
--- A double down will be allowed where you can trade one of your stocks (or cash) into a "double" position of one of your other stocks (or cash).
--- Once double downed, always doubled downed. In other words, when two stocks are merged into one, they cannot be unmerged. You can trade, freeze or unfreeze the merged unit just as you would a single unit.
--- Once two stocks have been merged via a double down they cannot be double downed into another stock or another stock cannot be double downed into them. A maximum of 2+2 of the 6 units can be merged together. In other words, you can have two double downs at once with two other stocks that are not doubled- ie 4 stocks and 6 units.
--- A maximum of two double downs are allowed per contest.
--- You cannot double down until two weeks have passed - after the close of Thursday, May 29th - which will allow it to be in effect as early as June 2nd - two weeks into the contest.
--- Only stocks that meet the earnings rule and the .25 rule can be double downed into.
15) Any stock - whether frozen or not -can be traded for cash, or another stock. In all cases, the value of the entity that you are trading away must be reinvested in total into the new entity.
16) There will be one Wild Card allowed. One of your picks can deviate from the VMC rule - either in terms of earnings or in terms of being a non-reporting pinky.
17) You are only allowed up to two short positions.
SHORT POSITIONS: A short position must take the form of any ETF. Shown below are four double-beta shorts against the corresponding index...
--- QID: Nasdaq 100
--- SDS: S&P 500
--- MZZ: S&P MidCap 400
--- DXD: Dow Jones Industrial Average
and one single beta short.
--- DOG: Dow Jones Industrial Average
18. A stock does not trade the day AFTER you pick it.
Trade: If one stock trades - whether Stock A (Sell) Or Stock B (Buy) you get a cash position and a transaction is used. If neither stock trades, the transaction is void.
Freeze: If you freeze a stock, whether it trades the following day or not is irrelevant. The freeze takes affect.
Unfreeze: If you unfreeze a stock, the unfreeze is voided and no transaction is used.
19) The 15% rule is designed specifically to discourage picking stocks that have low liquidity. Thus risk is associated with shooting the moon on a potentially bogus trade. However, this rule is NEGATED if the first trade the following day has a dollar volume of at least $50,000 OR if the stock ends above +15% on $100,000 in dollar volume.
---If you make a trade, and the stock you bought opens the next day up 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. The stock you sold turns into cash. 1 Transaction used.
---If you unfreeze a stock and it opens the next day at 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
---If you sell or freeze a stock and it opens the next day down15% or more on no news (and closes below15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens +15%+. Irrelevant
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens -15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens +15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens -15%+. Irrelevant
20) If a stock is halted for any reason and a person freezes it during the time it is halted, their price for the contest will be whatever it is frozen at AS LONG AS it remains frozen until the contest ends. Otherwise, the price will be the close of the first day of trading after the halt is lifted. Also, you cannot use those funds to buy or trade into any other stock while it is halted - just as in real life.
21) Fill/Kill will be offered to anyone who wants to not have to watch the screen every day. It will be for one week only and only one at a time per person. It is based on closing prices. Explanation of Fill/Kill: http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11239102
22) If a company gets sold during the contest, all normal rules apply. See this post. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11259177
23) DIGIRULE: This is a rule that comes into play only at the very end of the contest and only if the championship is on the line. It is designed to prevent extremely small dollar trades from affecting the outcome.
24) The deadline for all transactions is the market close on Friday, August 15th (two weeks before the end of the contest). A freeze (no longer a transaction) can be made up to the last day.
EARNINGS REQUIREMENT: To qualify, a stock (other than the wild card) must meet VMC earnings rules which are explained in the IBox on the VMC board http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=3251 Essentially, it means that a stock must report** quarterly for at least a year or as long as it has been public. No exceptions. Secondly, the company must have earnings in the most recent quarter - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent two quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent three quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent four quarters. In other words, there must be some interval of time (1, 2, 3 or 4 quarters) where the company has positive earnings.
