'Star Trek' Marks 40th Anniversary
By MICHAEL CIDONI
Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — Cue the iconic theme music: Forty years ago, on September 8, 1966, "Star Trek" lifted off into TV and cultural history. Over the subsequent decades, the sci-fi adventure series has amassed millions of fans and emerged as a relentless entertainment empire.
Stars William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy sat down recently with the Associated Press and recalled "The Man Trap," the episode that would kick off the show's three-year prime-time run.

Great moments in TV
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : I was free and clear. I was living the dream. I was stripped to the waist eating a block of cheese the size of a car battery.
Jerry <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000632/> : Before we go any further, I'd just like to point out how disturbing it is that you equate eating a block of cheese with some sort of bachelor paradise.
Mr. Lippman <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0266697/> : It's come to my attention that you and the cleaning woman have engaged in sexual intercourse on the desk in your office. Is that correct?
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Who said that?
Mr. Lippman <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0266697/> : She did.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : [pause] Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorence on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon... you know, cause I've worked in a lot of offices, and I tell you, people do that all the time.
Mr. Lippman <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0266697/> : You're fired!
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Well, you didn't have to say it like that.
Cushman <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0322339/> : I gotta tell you, you are the complete opposite of every applicant we've seen. Mr. Steinbrenner, sir. There's someone here I'd like you to meet. This is Mr. Costanza. He is one of the applicants.
George Steinbrenner <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0202970/> : Nice to meet you.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Well, I wish I could say the same, but I must say, with all due respect, I find it very hard to see the logic behind some of the moves you have made with this fine organization. In the past twenty years, you have caused myself, and the city of New York, a good deal of distress as we have watched you take our beloved Yankees and reduced them to a laughing stock, all for the glorification of your massive ego.
George Steinbrenner <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0202970/> : Hire this man!
Jerry <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000632/> : Looking at cleavage is like looking at the sun. You don't stare at it. It's too risky. Ya get a sense of it and then you look away.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : The sea was angry that day, my friends - like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli. I got about fifty feet out and suddenly the great beast appeared before me. I tell you he was ten stories high if he was a foot. As if sensing my presence, he let out a great bellow. I said, "Easy, big fella!" And then, as I watched him struggling, I realized that something was obstructing its breathing. From where I was standing, I could see directly into the eye of the great fish.
Jerry <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000632/> : Mammal.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Whatever.
Cosmo Kramer <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724245/> : Well, what did you do next?
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Well then, from out of nowhere, a huge tidal wave lifted me, tossed me like a cork, and I found myself right on top of him - face to face with the blowhole. I could barely see from the waves crashing down upon me but I knew something was there. So I reached my hand in, felt around, and pulled out the obstruction.
[George reveals the obstruction to be a golf ball]
Cosmo Kramer <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724245/> : What is that, a Titleist?
[George nods]
Cosmo Kramer <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724245/> : Hole in one, huh?
Jerry <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000632/> : You got the job?
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Jerry, it's fantastic. I love the people over there, th-they're treating me so great. You know, they think I'm handicapped. They gave me this incredible office, a great view.
Jerry <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000632/> : Ho-Hold on, they think you're handicapped?
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Yeah, yeah. Yeah well, because of the cane. You should see the bathroom they gave me.
Jerry <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000632/> : Ho-How can you do this?
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Look, Jerry let's face it. I've always been handicapped. I'm just now getting the recognition for it.
George collides with an Andrea Doria survivor]
Cosmo Kramer <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724245/> : The Andrea Doria collided with the Stockholm 20 miles off the cost of Nantucket.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : How do you know?
Cosmo Kramer <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724245/> : It's in my book, "Astonishing Tales Of The Sea". 51 people died.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : 51 people? I thought it was more like 1000.
Cosmo Kramer <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724245/> : There were 1,560 survivors.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : That's no tragedy. How many people do you lose on a normal cruise? 30?
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Oh, see? that's why I don't have cable in my house. Because of that naked station. If I had that in my house, I would never turn it off. I wouldn't sleep, I wouldn't eat. Eventually, firemen would have to break through the door, they'd find me sitting there in my pajamas with drool coming down my face.
[George is eating all the shrimp]
Riley <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0689177/> : Hey George, the ocean called, they're running out of shrimp.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Yeah, well, the jerk store called, they're running out of you.
Riley <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0689177/> : What's the difference? You're their all-time best seller.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : Yeah well... I had sex with your wife.
Board member: His wife is in a coma.
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : You ask me to have lunch, tell me you slept with Elaine, and then say you're not in the mood for details. Now you listen to me: I want details and I want them right now. I don't have a job, I have no place to go. You're not in the mood? Well you get in the mood!
George Costanza <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004517/> : I have to have my tonsils taken out.
Cosmo Kramer <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724245/> : Oh, man! No! George, we gotta get you out of here. Get out right now. They'll kill you.
Jerry <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000632/> : It's routine surgery.
Cosmo Kramer <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724245/> : Oh, yeah? My friend Bob Sacamano, he came in here for a hernia operation. Oh, yeah, routine surgery. Now he's sitting in a chair by a window going
[high-pitched voice]
Cosmo Kramer <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724245/> : "My name is Bob!"

North Carolina's nice--hiked up Grandfather Mountain once--loved it
mad mad mad mad world was a funny old comedy,a great cast
I am so affffffraid of heights, my husband to me to gGrand Father Mountain and made me cross the mile high swinging bridge. oh my god! scared me to death, it was cold and started snowing. I grew up in Maryland so the cold is no big deal. crossing that bridge and the wind kicked up. I just can't say it enough. oh my god.
...I guess they are harmless but I can't bring myself to pick up a praying mantis...
Last fall I drove up the road to the top of Pilot Mountain State Park. It's a curvy road and the trees come over top of you most of the way. The trees were turning and it looked like a gold neon light was on...simply breathtaking. Just a few miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway is Stone Mountain State Park (NC not Ga) and last time I went I counted over 50 deer! There is a 200' waterfall and a sheer rock face that's probably 1000" or so. Okay I'll quit.
oh I do love the scenery, I live in Florida I miss the seasons, the colors, the smells of the leaves. you can almost smell the colors. I miss Grasshoppers, lightning bugs and the praying mantis.
I love the BRP...That's beautiful scenery...
Doughton Park is nice (Just before you get onto Virginia)
The soon to be finished "mountain to the sea trail" goes through there and through Pilot Mountain...
...and y'all come back now...hear? LOL
for od music and video's I go to youtube.com I don't know if yo remember Skeeter Davis, the end of the world. found it on youtube. really check it out.
I love google search. you can find almost anything.
Yes, that's what I'm talking about. Seems like their library is composed of public domain shows and movies. But if this is true, it is the most complete list I've seen yet.
I will check it out and subscribe for month to see what I think of the quality.
Someday Turner, AMC, HBO, TVland, Cartoon Land and all the others rights owners will do the same. That would some kind of freedom of choice.
Thanks.

check out this site. it could be what you are looking for :)
Yup, Tvland is a great source for the old TV shows! I love it when any station has a marathon for a show like Star Trek, The Outer Limits, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone or any other past favorite of mine. Lots of these shows are on DVD now...but, there are still so many that aren't.
Hopefully, someone or company will someday make all of the old tv shows accessible for viewing on demand or downloading.
Old tv shows and old movies should be available and accessible like books. When that happens, I'll probably be spending much more time watching then typing.
We'll see. I think it's coming.
Someday we'll be able to get all of this stuff from our computers or tv it seems.
we have tvland on direct tv and they play old stuff, Gunsmoke,Bonanza,I am not sure it it is tvland ot the game channel that shows old game shows. like match game. they play Star Trek on tvland.
Well, for the longest time (in upstate NY) we only had 4 channels...6,10,13 and 17 PBS on UHF. Cable made TV viewing much better when we got 26 channels or so and the original HBO in the late '70's.
I still love the old movies and tv shows the most.
I'm not sure if, this is still true...but, up until the mid 1980's WPIX in NY city was still showing The Honeymooner's. They had been show this series non-stop since, it first aired! Now that may be some sort of a record. It's possible that The Twilight Zone or Star Trek may have had very long runs as well...in syndication...after the new shows ended.
yes that was the Globetrotters, I don't even know if they still exist. I watched the new guys once and never watched again. My sister and I got a joint Christmas present one year, we shared a room and we got a little tv, had to get up and change the channel, turn on and off. funny how now I think about all the programs we watched because we were to lazy to get up and change the channel. We had channel , 8, 10, 13, 28 and 44 that is all we had. lol don't know how many direct tv has.
Yeah, back in the days when folks were lucky if, they had more than one TV set. Yeah, the early '70's seems possible. There were a lot of variety shows on then. I don't think my parents watched them much so, I was stuck in that regard. Flip Wilson...Dean Martin...Carol Burnett and on and on and on....
Harlem Globe Trotters...was that with Meadow Lark Lemon and Curly Joe? I liked them a lot in the early '70's and I used to watch their Hanna Barbera cartoons around that time too. Damn, I even had a Globe Trotters metal lunch box (HB cartoon style) in 1971. Wow...what a trip! Mucho fun! :D
google searched Jonathan Winters, looks like it was late 60's check out airs next wednesday at 10:pm on CBS I will want to verify that.

well let me think I knwo it was in the early 70's, I used to babysit on sunday night and It came on after I got home so it was somewhere in there. I loved Red Skelton and Betty white, she is still funny. I remember the old Harlem Globetrotters. Never will forget the time my mom had gall bladder surgery and had not been home from the hospital more than a day or two when they had a game. Don't know what was funnier watching them or watching mom. she wouldn't let us turn the channel. that was so funny.
Roughly what year was that? I think there was a lot of live comedy taped and made during the mid to late 1950's (maybe into the early '60's) ...like The Milton Berle Show...Sid Caesar's Show of Shows...was that the name? (I'm not too familiar with this one) I think Red Skeleton had a show as well. The Betty White show was funny too...and Betty was a doll! I wish I could see much more of these shows. I really just enjoy watching them. It makes me feel good.
BTW...when I saw Jonathon Winters in It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (4 mads?) when I was a kid, I thought he was about the funniest guy around! Of course I liked Jerry Lewis a lot back then too. I guess I still like'em :)
I remember Jonathon Winters had a show, came on around 11:30 on Sunday night, Mom would yel lturn off the tv and go to bed. I loved it when he went to the attic and got into the old trunk, he would put on various items and make stuff up. too funny, you don't find much of that anymore.
never did hear of that, I have to tell you it is nice to find a board with so much in common and no fighting, Sometimes I keep waiting for someone to say ok pistols at noon, meet you in the street. lol
Nothing wrong with that. I like the company here and chat is welcome. I'm just hoping to draw in some folks with some similar interests to mine.
Did you ever hear about there being gold in NC? I have a strong feeling that most folks haven't.
Sorry for intruding.... :)
I love that show. sorry to intrude on your conversation. I love the Carolina's and the northern country, (Florida here) I got stuck on the Blue Ridge Parkway and spent a week on it one day. seems like forever between towns. Just flet the need to comment, don't know why sorry
Sounds great! There should be a lot of other Yankee fans there as always. Yup, the Yanks/Bronx Bombers are lookin' pretty darn good right now!
Yes, they did and jeter better win! lol
I'm going to go see them play next week @ baltimore stadium (I'm originally from Maryland). I can't wait!
Yankees won today didn't? Do you think Jeter will win the AL batting title? If, you like the Yanks...that's cool. So, do I.
I'm in NC too!
LOL I use to like dark shadows as well.
Oh, yeah! Vincent Price also use to host a night time thriller. I remember they use to come on around 11:30 Saturday nights and were black and white. OMG, did I say that? lol
No...but, I remember watching a TV show called Ghost Story and then, it was called Circle of Fear the next season...before it was removed. But, I was about 9 and this was around 1972.
I really used to love horror films and science fiction when I was a kid. In fact, I still do like'em!
When I was quite young and around age 4-6...I used to try to watch Dark Shadows...but, my mom kept putting on her soaps.
Oh, well....
Hello and welcome!!!
ps. I was living around the capital distric of NY at the time...and I'm still here. :)
I was born in Elkin...about 9 miles away and basically been here for 40 years and 7 weeks! I lived a little while in SC but not.
The Appalachian Trail is about 100 miles west of here (I've been on a little of that).
OMG brought back so many OLD memories. Does anyone remember the old scary movies hosted by GHOST HOST and CREATURE FEATURE?
As the camera closes in on an old mansion in the middle of a rainstorm, a voice comes on, saying "This...is you GHOST HOST! Inviting you to watch if you DARE!". He hovered on WBBF-TV in Baltimore, Maryland from 1971-to 1985.
How long have you lived there in NC? Look up the Reed mine. There have been some very large placer nuggets found in your state...but, I haven't heard of much in since the mid 1800's or so. I did a lot of studying on this earlier this year.
On nugget for instance was 52lbs. in one of the SW counties.
I could get much more specific...but, it's all about the geology and processes (and volcanic island arc) that formed the Appalachian mountain chain. Your state in particular looks like a glacier blew through your blue ridge and deposited gold in your piedmont area. In fact, the piedmont and your coastal plain were all formed from erosion of this volcanic island arc.
Wish I was where you are. Up state NY essentially has no gold. It's largely an extremely old granite shield structure. Where as if, you look at a geological map of your area and the Appalachian mt chain you will see just how massive these structures are. They are blatant!
You were not far from Mt Airy when you were in Winston Salem.
Another neat thing (forgive me) is that Heather Cox off American Idol lives in Jonesville which is right here about 7 miles away.
I've not thought about gold around here but who knows! The only Gold I have messed with has been OTC stocks and I lost money big time both times! I would hate to admit which 2 they were. PennyTA use to drop in and tell us all how stupid we were for messing with one in particular (PNDR) ...I shoulda listened!!!
I've been to and through Raliegh, Wiston-Salem and other parts of N. Carolina. And I like many other people believe it's truly a beautiful state. Some day I may go looking for gold down there. No joke. I'm sure you know your state has a decent amount of mineral wealth...though it seems to be rather hard to get at it.
Yes...NC
The Andy Griffith show was actually filmed in California but was supposedly in a small NC town called Mayberry. There is no Mayberry but some of the local landmarks on the show certainly match Mount Airy NC. Such as Mt pilot which is really called "Pilot Mountain"...nice short hiking trails. Of course they talk a lot about going to Raleigh which is a few hours away. They refer to the town of "Toast" on the show which is beside Mount Airy.
Yes I do like the old show but have seen them all I guess more than once...it kinda old hat now but still interesting. I live in a small town named Boonville after Daniel Boone who stayed here often. Another link to the oldies is that David Hart from "In the Heat of the night" lived here in Boonville for a little while. Long enough to get rid of a wife I heard. He was the bigger cop who was always eating or drinking something (not Bubba).
Very interesting. Do you like the Andy Griffith show? Since, I'm in the middle of writing this (while thinking...plus, I'm being a little lazy right now)...what state and what part of what state are we talking about?
North Carolina?
Thanks.
for what it's worth...
I can see "Mount Pilot" (as referenced on the Andy Griffith Show) from my backyard. I live about 30 miles from Mount Airy where Andy G was born and raised. The guy who played Goober has played charity golf tournys nearby...Lot's of local artists draw pics of the characters and Mount Airy has a Snappys Lunch and Floyd's Barber Shop. We have a local man who does a good impersonation of Barney. He has the car and uniform. Andy G has a bit of an aversion for this area though...if anyone cares to hear the story I'll write it.
