Denmark: The world's largest offshore wind farm built of the coast of Denmark
The world’s largest offshore wind farm was opened in September 2009 off the coast of Denmark.
Producing enough power for 200,000 Danish homes, the 91 Siemens wind turbines at Horns Rev 2 in the North Sea also show that a variable source of power can make a substantial contribution to electricity demand.
Wind energy is Denmark’s most abundant natural energy source. Already now, the country gets approximately 20% of its electricity from wind power.
This is expected to rise to 30% by 2012.
Energinet.dk manages the electricity system by careful planning and intelligent control so that troughs and peaks in wind power supply are balanced out effectively. This includes making calculations of expected wind generation and ensuring that other power sources are available when the wind drops.
“In the coming years Denmark is going to have even more offshore wind farms,” said Energinet.dk’s Torben Glar Nielsen at the opening of Horns Rev 2 this autumn.
“This requires both a more robust and more flexible electricity network, and is a very exciting challenge for us."
“Expansion of wind power is a cornerstone of Dong Energy’s strategy in the years ahead,” said Fritz Schur, chairman of the company’s Supervisory Board. “Establishing Horns Rev 2 is an important milestone in our gradual transition from conventional to green power generation.”

Tribes claim wind farm would destroy sacred ritual
1 minute ago
By JAY LINDSAY
Associated Press Writer
(AP:MASHPEE, Mass.) From a blustery perch over a Cape Cod beach, Chuckie Green gestures toward a stretch of horizon where he says construction of the nation's first offshore wind farm would destroy his Indian tribe's religion.
The Wampanoag _ the tribe that welcomed the Pilgrims in the 17th century and known as "The People of the First Light" _ practice sacred rituals requiring an unblocked view of the sunrise. That view won't exist once 130 turbines, each over 400 feet tall, are built several miles from shore in Nantucket Sound, visible to Wampanoag in Mashpee and on Martha's Vineyard.
Tribal rituals, including dancing and chanting, take place at secret sacred sites around the sound at various times, such as the summer and winter solstices and when an elder passes.
The Wampanoag fight to preserve their ceremonies has become the latest obstacle _ some say delay tactic _ for a pioneering wind energy project that seemed at the cusp of final approval.
"We, the Wampanoag people, who opened our arms and allowed people to come here for religious freedoms, are now being threatened with our religion being taken away for the profits of one single group of investors," Green said.
The Mashpee and Aquinnah Wampanoag claim Nantucket Sound is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a Traditional Cultural Property. The tribes say the designation, which would come with new regulations for activity on the sound, is needed to preserve not only their pristine views but ancestors' remains buried on Horseshoe Shoal, where the turbines would be built.
Cape Wind supporters say the tribes' claim for a National Register listing for the sound is baseless and was sprung late, in league with the project's most vociferous opponents, the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound.
"I think this is clearly a tactic for delay, for delay's sake," said Mark Rodgers, a spokesman for Cape Wind. "I think it's fair to say, looking at the past eight years, that opponents to Cape Wind have tried every conceivable strategy to slow down or stop the project."
Green bristles at the notion that the tribes, prodded by the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, are jumping in late just to gum up the works. Green and Audra Parker, the alliance's executive director, said the alliance supports the Wampanoags' claim, but didn't engineer it.
Cape Wind, proposed in 2001 and expected to cost $1 billion, aims to provide up to 75 percent of Cape Cod's power. Other offshore wind farm proposals are in earlier stages of development in several states, including Rhode Island, Delaware and Texas.
Cape Wind opponents say it would be a hazard to aviation, harm the environment _ including fish and bird life _ and mar historic vistas. The late Sen. Edward Kennedy, whose family compound would be in view of the project, fought the project until his death, saying it was a triumph of special interests over state interests.
A major decision on the Wampanoag claim is due within two weeks.
The U.S. Minerals Management Service, the lead agency reviewing the proposed wind farm, has recommended that the sound is not eligible for the National Register to Brona Simon, head of the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
Simon must decide by Nov. 12 if she disagrees. If so, the claim would be sent to the National Parks Service for a final ruling within 45 days.
A parks service decision that the sound should be listed a Traditional Cultural Property wouldn't kill Cape Wind, but it could add months to the approval process by forcing developers to comply with the designation's various standards.
Simon declined comment through a spokesman for the Massachusetts Secretary of State, which has jurisdiction over her office.
Earlier this year, in a letter to the minerals service, Simon criticized federal review of the project, saying it appeared to value Cape Wind's profitability and schedule over "effects to historic properties."
Barbara Hill of Clean Power Now, an advocacy group that supports Cape Wind, said the entire offshore wind industry would suffer if Simon decides more review of the tribal claim is needed.
"If there is going to be an allowance to this type of viewshed issue, as far as the eyes can see, what are we going to build?" she said.
Cape Wind appeared close to final approval in January when the minerals service concluded the project posed no major environmental problems. If the tribes win their claim, say project supporters, there would be a host of unintended consequences.
Two Massachusetts environmental and economic development officials, Ian Bowles and Greg Bialecki, produced a list of commercial activities _ from commercial fishing to sand mining _ they said would be hurt by the ensuing new regulations. They also argued the Supreme Court has ruled that a vast, unenclosed body of water such as the 560-square mile Nantucket Sound isn't eligible as a Traditional Cultural Property.
"It seems clear that this request for such a designation, coming at this time, is an attempt to block or further delay renewable energy development in Nantucket Sound," their letter said.
Rodgers said the tribes' concerns have always been taken seriously, and noted borings were taken at the project site to determine if an Indian burial ground is there _ though Green says they don't go deep enough. In a September letter to the tribes, the minerals service listed numerous times in the last three years when it met, or tried to meet, to discuss their concerns.
Green said despite the years of review, regulators have never truly met requirements to thoroughly address their concerns _ including the pending claim about the sound.
"I don't expect anything from this, except for due process," Green said. "And I have not received due process."

Environmental Facts the Greens Will Never Mention
The problem today is a minor one, but growing.
It is estimated that to provide enough energy from wind power
to reduce energy shortages in California, it would take wind

That could cause a lot of false tornado warnings.
Will Americans become accustomed to the false panics
and tragically ignore a real warning someday, causing

OT; interesting read. S.D. solar company tests floating panels for power
By Onell R. Soto
Union-Tribune Staff Writer

Daniel Parsons and Trent Waite of Pyron Solar install floating solar modules at SDG&E Mission Valley facility. (Onell Soto photo) - A San Diego company is betting that water will help it get the most out of the sun.
By floating photovoltaic panels in a shallow, round pool, Pyron Solar of Sorrento Valley says it will be able to reliably point them directly at the sun and keep them cool enough to operate efficiently.
The company demonstrated its technology yesterday at a San Diego Gas & Electric facility in Mission Valley.
Once technicians finish installing the panels in the next few weeks, the 45-foot-wide pool will produce 22 kilowatts to go directly onto the grid, said Pyron president Stephanie Rosenthal.
Engineers will track the system's output for 18 months to make sure it works works as expected.
SDG&E is supporting the effort by providing the land and taking the power.
The utility promoted the test as part of its efforts to encourage development of clean power technologies.
“This is one of many technologies we are working on,” said Hal Snyder, SDG&E's vice president of customer solutions.
Pyron hopes to build utility-scale systems by tying together a series of floating cells.
“We're really talking about a power plant here,” Rosenthal said.
The Pyron system uses a technology called concentrating solar, which pairs highly efficient solar panels initially designed for spacecraft with lenses that focus the sun's energy on a tiny space.
That means the system has to be precisely aimed, and it has to be kept cool.
Other companies do this by mounting the cells on a pole, and then using fans to cool them.
“The cooler the cells, the higher the efficiency,” Rosenthal said.
That means that the modules have to be spaced far enough that they don't shade or hit each other, Rosenthal said. And because they're high up in the air, high winds mean they have to shut down.
But by floating the cells, Pyron not only keeps them level and cool and out of the wind, but it can also place them closer together because they won't cast long shadows or knock together.
The company plans to use pingpong-size plastic balls to limit evaporation and put fish in the pool to fight mosquitoes.
Even as it is testing the system in Mission Valley, Pyron is planning to ramp up production at its 30,000-square-foot Sorrento Valley factory, she said.
Pyron's technology was pioneered by John and Inge Laing, a pair of La Jolla physicists and industrialists who worked for decades refining the concept of floating solar cells.
While they made their money pumps and fans, the Laings — who met at a university in their native Germany shortly after World War II — dreamed of harnessing the sun's power to replace fossil fuels.
“For 30 years, we've been fighting for the environment,” Inge Laing said in a 2005 profile in The San Diego Union-Tribune . “We want to get through this — whatever it takes.”
She talked of using solar power for African villages.
“When they have electricity, everything else falls into place,” she said.
Ellis Energy Investments of Bakersfield bought their company in June.

Atlantic Wind and Solar Inc. Contracted to Carry Out a Renewable Energy Feasibility Study for the Morton Salt Company..............AWSL
http://www.reuters.com/article/GlobalClimateandAlternativeEnergy09/idUSTRE58867I20090909
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is disappointed with the lack of breakthrough investment ideas in the green technology sector but the company is working to develop its own new mirror technology that could reduce the cost of building solar thermal plants by a quarter or more.
"We've been looking at very unusual materials for the mirrors both for the reflective surface as well as the substrate that the mirror is mounted on," the company's green energy czar Bill Weihl told Reuters Global Climate and Alternative Energy Summit in San Francisco on Wednesday.
Google, known for its Internet search engine, in late 2007 said it would invest in companies and do research of its own to produce affordable renewable energy within a few years.
The company's engineers have been focused on solar thermal technology, in which the sun's energy is used to heat up a substance that produces steam to turn a turbine. Mirrors focus the sun's rays on the heated substance.
Weihl said Google is looking to cut the cost of making heliostats, the fields of mirrors that have to track the sun, by at least a factor of two, "ideally a factor of three or four."
"Typically what we're seeing is $2.50 to $4 a watt (for) capital cost," Weihl said. "So a 250 megawatt installation would be $600 million to a $1 billion. It's a lot of money."
That works out to 12 to 18 cents a kilowatt hour.
Google hopes to have a viable technology to show internally in a couple of months, Weihl said. It will need to do accelerated testing to show the impact of decades of wear on the new mirrors in desert conditions.
"We're not there yet," he said. "I'm very hopeful we will have mirrors that are cheaper than what companies in the space are using..."
Another technology that Google is working on is gas turbines that would run on solar power rather than natural gas, an idea that has the potential of further cutting the cost of electricity, Weihl said.
"In two to three years we could be demonstrating a significant scale pilot system that would generate a lot of power and would be clearly mass manufacturable at a cost that would give us a levelized cost of electricity that would be in the 5 cents or sub 5 cents a kilowatt hour range," Weihl said.
Google is invested in two solar thermal companies, eSolar and BrightSolar but is not working with these companies in developing the cheaper mirrors or turbines.
In wide-ranging remarks, Weihl also said the United States needs to raise government-backed research significantly, particularly in the very initial stages to encourage breakthrough ideas in the sector.
The company has pushed ahead in addressing climate change issues as a philanthropic effort through its Google.org arm.
Weihl said there is a lack of companies that have ideas that would be considered breakthroughs in the green technology sector. After announcing its plans to create renewable energy at a price lower than power from coal, it has invested less than $50 million in other companies. Continued...

Solar Energy Initiatives Announces LOI for $17 Million in Commercial Projects
Solar Energy Initiatives, Inc. (OTCBB:SNRY), executing on a grass roots campaign, “RENEW THE NATION”, to help redeploy a portion of the U.S. workforce and focus on reducing the world’s dependence on fossil fuels by selling solar thermal and photovoltaic (PV) technologies, today announced letters of intent with several municipalities in various locations in the United States to install and operate approximately 4 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic (PV) systems on government buildings. The Company anticipates that the projects will be completed by the second quarter of fiscal 2010.
The Company will provide all solar equipment for the installation on the sites within the municipalities, as well as sell the newly generated solar energy to the buildings at a discounted rate compared to the previous electricity provider. Upon completion of the agreements, Solar Energy expects to provide energy savings to the municipalities without any out of pocket costs to the municipalities. The utilization of approximately 20,000 solar panels for the 4 megawatts of projects is projected to reduce hazardous carbon dioxide emissions by 6,000 tons, annually.
"Management is pleased with the Company’s ability to attract these profitable government ventures," stated Mr. David Fann, Chief Executive Officer of Solar Energy Initiatives. "We are encouraged with the recent influx of projects that the Company is being offered, as well as, our ability to secure multiple agreements simultaneously. Solar Energy’s proven business model which offers low cost, high return energy production to municipalities is rapidly being accepted throughout the alternative energy markets. The Company will continue to leverage its strategic business model and growing market presence in order to expand its geographic presence, increase earnings, and improve shareholder value.”
The Company will partner with a major funding source, installing the solar system at no "out of pocket" cost to the school district or municipality. In addition to the sale of solar panels into the projects, Solar Energy Initiatives will recognize energy sales over a 20-year period.
About Solar Energy Initiatives
Solar Energy Initiatives, Inc. (www.SolarEnergy.com) is dedicated to reducing the world’s dependence on fossil fuels by selling solar thermal and photovoltaic (PV) technologies, while building a profitable company.
