edit there are 2,500,000,000 chinese. there are 4000 chinese with sars. there are 140 sars deaths
that is like 16000000 to one. that is 1/1000 of your chance of dying by outboard motor in the united states
actual data:
From: 1 Nov 2002 To: 8 May 2003, 18:00 GMT+2
Country: Cumulative no. case(s) (1)/ no. new cases since last WHO update (1)/ no. deaths/ No. recovered (2)/ date last probable case reported/ date for which cumulative no. of cases is current
Notes: Cumulative number of cases includes number of deaths. 1. A decrease in the number of cumulative cases and discrepancies in the difference between cumulative number of cases of the last and the current WHO update are attributed to the discarding of cases.
2. Includes cases who are "discharged" or "recovered" as reported by the national public health authorities.
3. One death attributed to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China occurred in a case medically transferred from Viet Nam.
Notes: Recent local transmission has occurred when, in the last 20 days, one or more reported probable cases of SARS have most likely acquired their infection locally regardless of the setting in which this may have occurred.
+ Low -- Imported probable SARS case(s) have produced only one + generation of local probable cases, all of whom are direct personal contacts of the imported case(s). ++ Medium -- More than one generation of local probable SARS cases, but only among persons that have been previously identified and followed-up as known contacts of probable SARS cases. +++ High -- Local probable cases occurring among persons who have not +++ been previously identified as known contacts of probable SARS cases.
Good point. We can be flippant towards Sars as many have shown to be on this borad as we have had no deaths here in the US. No matter what your statisical take, FACT is that Sars is being treated as a big event in Asia. It cannot be disputed. And so arguing that it should not be a big deal to Asia from our perspective is self-centered focus for sure.
