I think you better check your numbers. If Vernon gets taken down, I believe the company still has enough capacity to smelt 100% of its lead requirements from the two functioning smelters in MO and IN where there are no or only trivial enviro concerns. The trucks that bring product to branches and Pep Boys will still bring batteries to California and still return East with warranty and spent batteries. There will be little interruption to Exide, including transportation costs.
The interruption will be to the other collectors of spent batteries in CA that will be told "Sorry, we have no way to process your junk" who will have to pay to truck it to Missouri when Quemetco/COI is full... should take, maybe, 2 weeks... or find a way to make midnight runs to landfills or vacant lots to rid themselves of the hazmat burden at The State of California's eventual expense to clean up, after it creates a very real and present environmental danger, not some lead dust in a storm drain.
California can only LOSE by forcing a shutdown showdown and it won't take long for the impact to reach crescendo dimensions, IMO.
