#3241 RE: wbmw #3240

wbmw, about two years ago I sent a question to AMD on their compiler development for x86-64. At the time they replied that it had very high priority and they had a software team dedicated to it. Now, words are cheap and I do not keep up with compiler details, but the implication of the reply was that they realized they had to supply their own optimizations for the third party compilers.

I would think the main things required are register passing optimizations (easy), SSEII optimizations (not as easy) and how best to handle 32-bit variables in the 64-bit model. Also how best to handle multithreading when some threads are 32-bit and require a context change, although that is an OS consideration rather than a compiler issue.

We'll soon see whether or not they succeeded.
