I think that Intel will integrate a memory controller, graphics, or anything else when they have a solution that will allow them to ramp their manufacturing facilities without depending on the memory industry (which is what they would be forced to do if they have to respin silicon every time a new memory standard comes out).

Well that's a provocative statement. What are you suggesting?

wbmw: It sounds like you mean "scary" in a good way, as in "surprisingly efficient". In that case, I agree, and I think that Intel will integrate a memory controller, graphics, or anything else when they have a solution

And, indeed, that's the meaning of "scary" I was trying to convey.

I would really like to see a serious test of Banias in a desktop environment. For example, what is the effect on latency of the power-saving features of the 8-way L2 cache? (If you've read any such serious benchmarking of Banias, please toss me a link!)

A slight redesign of Banias for a desktop CPU could reveal a serious contender to the speed crown. Certainly, in terms of performance per mm², nothing would seem to come close. (Of course, a comparison with a theoretical Athlon64 is not quite fair, since the Hammer chips integrate the memory controller).
