And, indeed, that's the meaning of "scary" I was trying to convey.

I would really like to see a serious test of Banias in a desktop environment. For example, what is the effect on latency of the power-saving features of the 8-way L2 cache? (If you've read any such serious benchmarking of Banias, please toss me a link!)

A slight redesign of Banias for a desktop CPU could reveal a serious contender to the speed crown. Certainly, in terms of performance per mm², nothing would seem to come close. (Of course, a comparison with a theoretical Athlon64 is not quite fair, since the Hammer chips integrate the memory controller).
