Siege on campsite turned fatal: inquest

AAP

By Isabel Hayes - November 25, 2013, 1:58 pm

It was supposed to be a spiritual celebration of happiness, love and harmony.

But the peace of the Rainbow Family gathering in northern NSW was shattered after 33-year-old Ryan Pringle terrorised the group with a large knife and crossbow, threatening them with death.

Mr Pringle, the son of former rugby league player Neil Pringle, was shot dead by police on April 15 last year after three days of his increasingly erratic behaviour culminated in a terrifying siege.

An inquest into his death is examining the circumstances of his death and whether police were justified in their actions.

Several campers took the stand at the Coroners Court on Monday and described how Mr Pringle behaved oddly and aggressively during the first couple of days of the School of Happiness retreat - eating a honeycomb covered in bees and threatening to kill dogs.

On the day of the incident, one camper, Solihin Millin, told the inquest he was sitting naked at the campfire with other "hippies" when Mr Pringle started abusing the group.

The court heard Mr Pringle had a history of mental illness and had taken illegal drugs.

"The gist of it was that he was Jesus Christ, we were demons and we had to be punished," Mr Millin said.

"(As far as he was concerned) we were absolutely under his control and were to do as he said."

After Mr Pringle struck a woman who disagreed with him, two campers briefly pinned him to the ground before Mr Pringle returned wielding a "Crocodile Dundee knife", Mr Millin said.

Several campers fled, with one man dislocating his shoulder running through the bush, while others described how they desperately crossed a river in the dark to try and get help.

"I remember being very scared," Nicole Delaine, who crossed the river and drove 27km to alert police, told the court.

Meanwhile, Mr Pringle retreated to the campsite building with his fiancée and the campsite owner, where he dunked the owner's head in water and threw stones at her.

At one point he said, "Jesus died when he was 33 and I'm 33", the court heard.

Senior Constable Karen Peasley and Sergeant Carter Knyvett arrived at the scene and confronted Mr Pringle, who dropped the knife and ran into the bush.

However, while the officers were helping scared campers to evacuate the area, Mr Pringle re-emerged from the bush armed with a crossbow.

Dave Evans told the court he squeezed under a burning hot van to escape.

"I was scared for my life," he said.

The officers told Mr Pringle to drop the crossbow "at least six times" the court heard, while he screamed at them to drop their guns.

Mr Millin described the officers as "very humble" and "kind".

Sen Const Peasley fired her Taser, before Sgt Knyvett discharged his firearm a number of times, hitting Mr Pringle in the lower back.

Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he died at the scene.

Many of the campers wept as they described their fear that day and one, Vera Breier, thanked Sgt Knyvett for saving her life.

Neil Pringle had his head in his hands for much of the evidence and other relatives were visibly upset.

The inquest continues before Deputy State Coroner Hugh Dillon.

to Rainbow Gathering .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Gathering..

.. overall it basically sounds a good idea, and don't mean to cast a broad negative brush at all .. it does seem some of them leave unpaid medical bills, and have a bit of trouble with police at times .. i don't know if the above gathering was one of one of the Christian Rainbow Families groups, or not ..

Well I grew up a Catholic and attended Catholic schools and the nuns were about as anti-semitic as you could get thinking the Jews killed Christ their husband so to speak.

In 7th Grade I ask the sister in class how come you don't blame the Italians as it was the Italian Soldiers who nailed him to the cross and an Italian Soldier who speared him and an Italian Oversear/Governor who convicted him. She got visibly upset and said I shouldn't question Christ's teaching. So I said - "Where does he teach that" and she just stared at me and asked to see her after class where I just had to sit there until she finished and went to the Convent.

If they really understood Christianity they would thanks the Jews because it was all part of god's plan and they really had no choice as they were just actors on a stage. But bigots and religious people who don't have a good understanding of their religion a vessels of hate.
