I am not sure what your definition is for an embolus . To me embolus is any detached flowing mass in the vessel that can arise from a clot that becomes detached. A free floating clot arise from a ruptured fibrous cap is an embolus. If its not detached its a thrombus. Atheroembolus is am embolus consists of cholesterol. I think we are talking about the exact same thing but you seem to define things differently. Here is the uptodate reference:

As for mechanism here is the quote from FDA letter "In the most recent clinical trial data submitted by the manufacturer to FDA, at least 20 percent of all participants treated with Iclusig have developed blood clots or narrowing of blood vessels." They must have done angiogram to conclude narrowing of blood vessels. If that is not due atherosclerosis, I am not sure what your explanation is for the narrowing (continued vasospasm??)
