I wasn't there of course, but I agree with the statement above. A mixture of things, not wanting to expose an underbelly would be in line with this.

I doubt they would perceive this play as goofy, it just isn't. Had to be some sort of peer pressure.

I actually believe that laughing at it was also a defense mechanism because they actually fear the subject matter.
