Brokeback Mountain -
3.77/4. It has become customary in a lot of modern films to include homosexuality as some kind of declaration banner of openmindedness and cool. Not the case here. It's a love story and I am going to take a page from some of the other reviiewers and say nothing else about theme and plot.
Like "the Ice Storm", Lee often uses the scenery, weather, etc. to set the mood, but not in a heavy handed way. The score was so nicely integrated as to be almost beneath notice. Can't believe how much I like some of this guy's films and hate the Crouching Tiger stuff.
On the performance, Heath Ledger was incredible. Has to have the Oscar for best actor. Best male actor, whatever they are callingi these days. Michele Williams (the phone call scene) and Anne Hathaway were also very good. Jake Gyllenhaal as Jack Twist was not on the same level, but decent. Going to be the big winner this year. Must see movie.
