#2735 RE: nlies #2727

Nlies, just saw your post disagreeing with me. My post was poorly worded. Your post is accurate with the following caveat. All of the ASIC listed suppliers are licensed to sell ASICs according to the limitations in their licensing agreement. According to Julie McClure (Qualcomm IR) all of the licenses are different and Qualcomm has never disclosed those limitations or terms (other than the press releases). I cannot find the original Agere press release, but my memory is that they are licensed only for modem cards.

Regardless, Qualcomm has no problem licensing ASIC suppliers who may want to manufacture their own chips and sell them to the mass market. Bottom line is no one yet has come close to being able to compete with Qualcomm's chip sets. As you say, it remains to be seen whether or not Samsung will be competitive. To the extent that it may help to grow the market I welcome them.
