Unfortunately, those in the know are outnumbered by those who are not. Some of us have been aware that oil is a finite resource. Others have been blithely frittering it away as though it will always be cheap. It isn't anymore. I think some are starting to realize that it is only going to get more expensive and less available. Coal, on the other hand, is much more plentiful. I remember from doing some research on the subject some years ago that the USA has one third of the known coal in the world, and if we used it for all of our power generation it would last us five hundred years. Of course that was some time ago, and we are using more power. Coal also contributes to those greenhouse gases.
It seems to me that the only real solution is going to be nuclear energy. While Hydrogen fusion would be nice, the engineering to accomplish it is probably many years into the future, if it ever gets done.
The worst thing in my mind is that our politicians care only about getting reelected and will not make any hard choices because it might lose them a few votes. Dithering about with building a permanent storage facility is just one of their many cowardly moves. It never ceases to amaze me how they will spend millions in campaigns to get a job that pays so little. My only hope is that they might someday have to get a real job for real money like the rest of us.
