The most extraordinary aspect about d'Yquem is the miniscule yields, averaging at only 9 hl/hc: practically one glass of wine for every vine. Naturally one must remember that this is knife-edge wine making since a myriad of misfortunes can beset the vineyard whose raison d'etre is based on an anomaly of nature and in some years no wine made at all e.g. 1951, 1972, 1974 and 1992.
