And you aren't factoring in the preservation of the purity of EPA. Shelf life. OTC fish oil can't keep the EPA preserved for extended periods of time. Often, you will get rancid oil, if not careful, checking exp dates. Even within expiration, you will get gradual oxidation of the EPA in OTC.

AND The potency of various products depends not only upon the levels of EPA and DHA, but also upon the molecular structure of the fats in the oil, which in turn affects absorption.

And excess amount of DHA are irritating to the stomach, fish burps, not good for heart and LDL-C.

Not sure what brand you are taking but here is the breakdown for Norwegian Gold 1000mg EPA

30 pills costs about $40.00 retail. One pill is 1200mg and by lab analysis (IFOS) contains about 1046 actual mgs of EPA. So approximately 87% EPA. Online it can be had for $34.00 per 30 but after you add in shipping you are right back to the full retail price. At $40.00/30 pills we get $1.33 per approx 1gm of EPA

Yesterday I renewed my script for Vascepa. It is an off label script and there is no coverage for me. Vascepa is a 1000mg pill with 96% or greater EPA concentration. So each pill contains 960mg of EPA
Cost with coupon was $35.48/30 pills or $1.18 per approx 1gm EPA

Pretty close. Norwegian Gold is .0012715 per milligram ( $1.33/1046)
Vascepa is .001229 per milligram ( $1.18/960)

Vascepa is alittle cheaper even for out of pocket and is stocked at my local CVS. No wait. Factor in insurance coverage for those covered under the current indication and it is a no brainer. Norwegian Gold flavors their fish oil and I suspect there is a reason for that! lol

There is no competition for Vascepa with OTC or generics (in the next 17 years)...PERIOD.

All pure EPA OTC is oxidized. This is bad, as the oxidized compound doesn't have the potency as Vascepa.

How do you know it oxidized? It will smells like fish. Pure, unoxidized EPA has no smell.

PlusEPA smells like fish, it's oxidized. 1000 mg doesn't the same potency as Vascepa, simple pharmacology 101.

Amarin, I expect that BASF annoucement before the end of the day. The FDA has realized this change on 4-19, out with the 8-K and make it flashy. Drop Pronova in the annoucement, so we can light a fire under GSK:)
