If the CC stuck to it's knitting, remained true to it's preaching and didn't involve itself in secular issues they would not be ridiculed quite so much...For some reason many (probably more than we know) in the CC church believe it doesn't have to practice what it preaches (see priest's behavior) and believes it has an "obligation" to use it's influence and enforce it's will on a secular society (see abortion). The CC picks and choses what secular issues it will speak out on (see abortion again), while not speaking out loudly enough on abuses of pol leaders who take a country to war based on a lie and sensible gun control laws.
For all the good the CC church does, and it does some good, it has allowed itself to become involved in areas they don't belong - once that happens, they and their followers have to accept the criticism as well as praise that accompanies their involvement.
