Italian President Giorgio Napolitano said Friday that Germany should make more of an effort to help the euro-zone economy.
Mr. Napolitano said that "it would be licit to expect an expansionary impulse by Germany , as a contribution to a real and not just proclaimed boost to economic growth and employment in Europe ," Italy's head of state said in a speech delivered at a Berlin university.
"We are all in the same boat," Mr. Napolitano said, adding that Germany's own economy is exposed to the recessionary conditions in its neighbors.
Mr. Napolitano is near the end of his seven-year term but his last weeks in office will be spent trying to shepherd the formation of a government after national elections he described as "complicated" due to the lack of any clear winner.
Television cameras in Berlin also reported he ruled out serving as president for another term.
