sab,
One thing to keep in mind is that VRNG issues PRs and files Form 8-Ks more than any company I have ever followed. They are extremely friendly to shareholders and very transparent to market participants.
Most companies do not file an 8K when sending out a standard patent infringement letter. VRNG did.
Most companies do not put all legal documents on their company websites. VRNG does. In fact, VRNG put the entire 836-page "Intitial Document Production" compilation on their website.
Most companies do not reveal the entirety of their patent transactions. VRNG did just that and even itemized each patent with a break down that included declarations of essentiality to Standards Settings Organizations (ETSI, ARIB, ATIS, etc).
Obviously we do not have all the information regarding the company's decision to file an 8-K over this corporate code of ethics policy -- and clearly most companies would not have done so. But IMHO, based entirely on VRNG's historical reporting practices, I don't think we need to read much more into it other than it's just one more document they decided to share.
