Well it sounds like prices must have seriously dropped during that year, because I looked it up, and the 200MHz PPro (small cache version) launched in November, 1995 for $1325. Meanwhile, Pentium 166 MMX launched in January, 1997 for $407. Hmm, a $900 difference in 14 months... certainly possible, but I wasn't considering the price of older generation parts for the purposes of my argument. And besides, I began my timeline in May, 1997, not too long after you could have possibly purchased the 166MHz MMX.
