In the early 80s thugs were grabing foreigners off the streets in Beruit and holding them for ransom At least 7 Americas were kidnapped. Four Russian businessmen were taken. The Russians flat refused to negotiate for their release. All four were found executed in a garbage dump.
Over the next few weeks dozens of men that Russia suspected of being involved in the excutions, started showing up in garbage dumps---along with family members. No more Russians were kidnapped in Beruit.
IMO, one of Russia biggest mistakes in Afghanistan happened at the end of the war. The Taliban mined a long tunnel that lead from Afghanitan to the USSR. As the last Russian were leaving, the Taliban blew up the tunnel when there were several fuel tankers in it. Hundreds of Russians were killed.
I'm amzed the Russians didn't retaliate by carpet bombing Kabul. They tucked tail and ran. Like we are fix'n to.
