This will sound very arrogant, but I think the ability to do DNA sequencing in a very standardized "just send it to the core facility" fashion has encouraged many people without training to indulge themselves. In that respect, I'm not surprised that much of the DNA sequence based data remain confusing and unresolved.

It does not sound arrogant, IMO. When powerful suites of statistics software (such as early versions of SPSS) hit the market several decades ago, they made it possible for social scientists to embark on massive fishing expeditions. Naturally, they found myriad associations that contributed little or nothing to human knowledge.
