Our vehicles in California (in case the big one hit) each had a euro back pack that had a long list of supplies which would enable you to survive for weeks coupled with five gallons of water and a one gallon canteen as well as various tools for self defense, walking shoes, a complete change of clothing, extra underwear and socks, etc. A heavy duty fold up luggage cart tucked in each trunk could also be used to haul the stuff behind you (including the five gallons of water) as you walk your way out if necessary.
A Land Cruiser purchased as a get out of California vehicle, had a large back pack that could be broken down in to more than one pack, so the weight could be carried by more than one person, but could be carried as one large back pack if necessary.
Each residence was equally well outfitted, but the reality was, you were just as likely to be caught away from home when the big one hit and trapped on a freeway in one of the many gang invested areas. At the least, if you had to walk home or to one of the gathering sites, you may have to traverse through gang invested areas, not to mention the high probability of a quick break down into lawlessness evidenced during the early nineties riots.
I also composed a blue notebook of which copies were placed in each back pack which included various information important during such an event, private phone book, various contingency instructions, prioritized places to meet, out of state primary contacts to use for communications (leaving message for one another), etc.

When I am doing one of my "Always Be Prepared" projects and my wife often rolls her eyes, I always tell her...it is insurance we hope we never have to use, just like our vehicle and residence insurance. If you ever need the emergency packs, you will say to yourself, I am so glad "my main squeeze" ignored my snide comments and went ahead and prepared us...gg
