It's nice to get the divy but sometimes knowing the ex date is key because everyone who knows they already qualified for the divy might dump that day because they already got what they wanted from the trade. Sometimes the pps can drop enough to cancel out any gains you get from the divy. Seen it many times in forward splits and other dividends.
