I doubt companies like Coca Cola or UPS developed their own version of MS Excel to avoid licensing from MS.

UPS developed its own software to reduce the miles its 90000 trucks and other vehicles drive by routing them more efficiently. The new software helped UPS cut 30 million miles per year, slash fuel costs and reduced carbon emissions by 30,000 tons.

Coca Cola developed logistics and production operations software to communicate with servers which also use the company's own software.

Like I said, it would be foolish to think they couldn't come up with an "APP" like Phoneguard should the need arise...
