or it could just be the longer qualification cycle for Opterons which is why 2.8 Opterons are only appearing now after the FX-57. ~1K is their de-facto top-end price-point and the 4800+ price is now $900, below a 1K FX-57.

The most popular chip from the people that I talk to is the 4400 chip because of cache.

I haven't heard of shortages of the other chips and the real
price has actually dropped so I'd guess that supply issues
aren't a huge issue right now.

BTW, which Opteron processor costs thousands of dollars? I think
that the highest that I've seen is in the $1,500 area.

I don't. AMD just launched a 2.4GHz DC Opteron

2.4 GHz Opteron is due later this year. 2.4 GHz DC is available only as Athlon 4800.
