Well hello... it's Intel's next generation micro-architecture. It never ceases to amaze me that some people can look at this announcement and still come up with contrived cases where AMD's current products could beat it today. Granted, Intel screwed the pooch with Prescott micro-architecture, but they aren't going to make the same mistake twice.
Micro-architecturally, Merom/Conroe/Woodcrest look fantastic. It has all the elements of a great CPU: a reasonable, 14-stage pipeline, elegant dual core integration, extreme low power enhancements, 4-wide issue width, pre-fetch and cache enhancements, deeper OOOE engine, all the *T and SSE-n instructions of the desktop (including EM64T, but minus HT, apparently), and if rumors are correct, frequencies approaching 3.0GHz.
You can't take this pot of ingredients and predict a fallen soufflé.
