Oh, and while a league differs in length from country to country and is largely obsolete as a unit of measure, it is always greater than 2 statute miles. So 20,000 leagues would be greater than 40,000 miles "under". The diameter of the Earth, as I am sure you know being so well educated, is less than 8000 miles. So putting yourself 20,000 leagues under, would mean interplanetary space. Verne was referring to the length of the journey, not the depth.
