Not being an engineer or scientist I have difficulty understanding how, after 28 missions & the Columbia being 22 years old, there cannot be any structural integrity damage given the pressure on takeoff & re-entry. At what point does NASA decide to retire a shuttle and go onto the the next generation?

A sad day & a terrible tragedy.
