Most people don't understand the mechanics. Predator fishes like Salmon are water polluters. Crustaceans are water cleaners. If you tail end the predators water runoff, first with a microbial like algea and/or bacteria, and then with crustaceans; you complete the cycle and end up with nearly clean water and a nearly sterile sludge.
The predators will eat the shrimp, so you have to keep them separate. The shrimp will eat the microbes and algea, so it helps to accelerate the microbes and algae separately.
