#60232 RE: KeithDust2000 #60229

Keith I happen to have the IDC report for Q1 X86 chipset market share on my desktop and there is a HUGE disconnect between IDC and Mercs. numbers. For example in Q1 NVIDIA had 25,7% of the AMD MSS and ATI had 6%. I think maybe Via is getting it's butt kicked. In Q1 they had about 45.4 % of AMD market per IDC. I not very used to Mercury's reports and not used them in the past. I don't see them as a source in research reports.

in your link....

AMD processors-compatible chipset market accounts for 13% of the whole core-logic market. NVIDIA currently commands 35% of the market, down 20% from the previous quarter, according to data by Mercury Research. ATI commanded 27% of the market in Q2, up from virtually nothing in Q1 2005. VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems share the rest 38%.

KeithDust2000, on ATI vs. nVidia chipsets

It seems to me that this boat has sailed for a good, long cruise. It will be extremely difficult for nVidia to dislodge ATI in this market as ATI is shipping extremely capable, low-power components. ATI has very good relationships with the Taiwanese ODMs (built up with Intel chipsets) and they have little reason to abandon ship :).
