For years I had a poster in my room at Shippensburg High School that said:

THE ONLY TRUE SELF-ESTEEM COMES THROUGH ACHIEVEMENT.

Years ago when I was teaching an 8th grade math class, I chewed out a student for not doing his homework. Another student (Board President's daughter) said, "You're going to ruin his self esteem." I glared at her and said, " I don't teach self esteem."
