Good post. It seems it is better to cast dispersions on every move than to look at what the future could bring.

They dug up some gossip and said he didn't battle Netscape and MS for the internet brower war. Maybe he was smart and knew when to not waste company resources on a battle he could not win.

As the song says "You have to know when to hold em and when to to fold em".

rwk, with respect,

whether compensating the founders (effectively speaking) of a developing cash-poor cash-flow-awful company with cash instead equity is irrational, is strictly a matter of opinion and no amount of statistics or bluster calling for such will amend that, statistically speaking that is.

I welcome a sound statistical argument supporting any notion that SKS and Feeney (e.g.) would have walked had compensation been handled more, uh, rationally.

No. It is the result of vision. This is why I and folks like dig space acknowledge this attribute.

The discipline issue appears as a result, for instance, of the massive stock dilution deriving from the funding of WXP, long after it seemed to be an obvious money-pit. Sometimes, a company needs to chop off the dead wood. I think Mr F has a track record of being willing to make that kind of decision.

Some posters had no qualms about that expenditure. This was their right. But profligacy isn't always the best policy for a company, even if it appears supportive to back every management or board decision.

The virtue of vision and the harm of indiscipline are not mutually exclusive features of a company's or a board's activity.
