You miss the whole point. Saddam's history does not matter, his present situation does. As long as he was limited to conventional arms, he was easily contained and thus not a real threat, but once he develops a nuclear capability, he becomes a universal threat that is extremely difficult and dangerous to deal with. That must not be allowed to happen.
That answer may not fit neatly into your liberal view of the world, but this is the real world that we live in, and it has real problems that demand real solutions.
