they wanted someone who could beat & get rid of Christine. They were afraid of what would happen if she rejoined a merged tribe

They were expecting the merge and they didn't think that Cochran could beat the girl on Redemption Island. By sending Ozzie they figured they would keep the numbers tied (6-6) so that they wouldn't get picked off one by one.

With Cochran's defection, it backfired.
