rick & alea, the turf issue

has a foundation of quick sand. Say the NSA and DOD want to have complete compatibility over their various platforms. If so, they will get it. Now say, the NSA and DOD want all of their suppliers to have complete compatibility. Then that will happen too and it will go way across and down the supply chain. So how will the carriers draw a line in the sand and then enforce it? The cost of doing so will be not be justified by the remaining revenue stream to be guarded. Further, the potential revenues from being pipe providers and sellers of platforms will swing the balance in favor of more open systems.

At least that's what I think...

Hi rick*,

That's a nice way of putting it. I'm not sure if they can do so. But they have surely tried to hold back the tide.

If they cannot, they are doubtless worrying about becoming akin to the fixed line carriers who are running a fading legacy business model.

Maybe that is the way things will go from here as devices become smarter and more secure.

Or maybe - as I think they are doing - they are pushing into the transactional space in which they can not only act as bitpipe providers but they can also tax individual transactions on a value basis. Hence the Isis eWallet and the corralling of the merchant card services.
