After looking into this question, I found that the answer is not simple. Ethanol can be made from the inedible corn biomass or from the food portion of the plant; the latter is the main method in use today. When ethanol is made from the food portion of the plant, the feedstock for the production process is not the raw corn, but rather a derivative that has undergone processing in which material usable for animal or human food has already been extracted.
