There was no way in my mind that AMD or UMC had the resources needed to develop a state of the art 0.65u 300mm process. With help from IBM they will get it done.
This is NOT good news for Intel.

I can't believe IBM needs AMD's help to develop a new process. The only thing that makes sense to me is that AMD realizes how far behind they're falling and is looking for more help. Who else are they going to ask? AMD is the one who needs this agreement and IBM is just doing it for the money.

Maybe I was wrong.
according to this article:

AMD is indeed walking away from UMC... Hummm, what is the new manufacturing strategy?

I have no reason to believe that this process will not be used in the joint AMD/UMC factory. I am as much a fan of Intel as anybody around here, but the press release explicitly states they have the option to manufacture at selected partners. This indicates to me that IBM will probably put the process at Chartered and AMD at UMC. Wow! Some reasoned thinking......perhaps even a bit of paranoia. Didn't think I'd ever see any on the Intel I'm OK, You're OK Corral thread. Bravo.
