I don't know of to many people who promote abortion but do feel it should be a viable option for a woman. Afterall I certainly don't support forced pregnancies and then having that person to live with that decision the rest of her life. Many reasons people chose abortions that I may disagree with but I don't want it to be illegal by any stretch.
Most progressives I know have problems with them getting rights that are denied to others whether that be civil rights, equal rights, voting rights etc. I notice many conservatives have no problem wanting to deny rights that they receive to others. I believe I will only live once and that's the end. So why deny others who are not born with the same genes I was born with the same rights I have. Why should the government be in the business of denying them rights? Well they shouldn't and I also say any religion should have the right of denying marriage to anyone they want. Those two opinions are not in conflict as long as the government does not discriminate.
But then we get into all types of other things that conservatives have opposed that progressives and liberals fought for that has made this country great such as:
Worker rights - conservatives opposed this often in the beginning with deadly force
Social Security and safety nets for the elderly - the single biggest transition for elderly people to have some dignity
Medicare - the single biggest help for the elderly in getting care as there was no insurance policies covering people as they got older as it was very very expensive - conservatives opposed this
Medicaid - conservatives have never really supported aid to children as seen in the states they reside in with their little support of education or medical help
support for education - minimum wage - unemployment compensation - affirmative action - welfare - all these issues were opposed by conservatives and supported by progressives.
So with the above it appears that conservatives appear not to want to help lift others into a better place or even taking burdens away from them that they themselves don't have. So my question to you is why haven't you been a progressive before and are just asking about this now?
