Hi Annie, Its a real pleasure to speak with you. I have a great deal of admiration for what you have accomplished and share.
The straw was an experiment this year for my potatoes. I have learned that I need to keep piling it on to make it deeper. It decomposes and shrinks more than originally anticipated.
I'm trying very hard to grow my own chicken feed. I had grand plans of expanding my garden and dedicating part of it to field corn and green beans. I felt that this would be a good start to chicken feed. Unfortunately, the corn didn't sprout like I was hoping and the bare spot in this picture is where the green beans have gotten chewed off at ground level by those cute little bunny rabbits. I've planted pole beans all over the yard and those cute little bunnies really liked it. Next year, I will go ahead and put that electric fence up that I bought 2 years ago. That means I need to plan it out and put the vining, climbing plants in the middle so they don't interfere with the fence. That's what is stopping me now. That and lack of time.
Here is what has come up of the corn I planted. My sweet corn is growing better than the field corn. Those cute little raccoons really like it. grrrrrrr....
I hope you are having a prosperous and productive summer.
