Thanks DA, where abouts are you located?
Come Fall, are you planning to till or dig in the straw you are now using for mulch? It will improve your soil if you do.
I have grown Buckwheat for my chickens and they love it. From start to finish takes only 5 - 6 weeks so is ideal for me to grow up here in BC.
Our chickens get all of our garden trimmings and weeds. We don't actually have a compost pile here. We have manure piles instead.
Our animals eat all the waste and also extra garden vegetables. This year we are not raising pigs like we usually do. When we do have pigs, they actually have their own garden. I grow lots of beets, carrots, mangels, sugar beets, chard, etc. for them.
It makes the pork taste out of this world delicious. And of course, our chickens get a lot of that feed too. If I could we would grow lots of corn for chicken feed. But the climate here makes it too hard to grow lots of corn. If we still lived on the coastline of BC, we could sure grow it there.
