What I'm looking for is a place to invest some money based on the belief that natural gas prices will not stay at this level for very long, and that the demand for energy from the emerging nations will be insatiable.

If your focus is the latter (i.e. The Global Demographic Tailwind), then companies that produce LNG for consumption in Asia are probably a better bet than North American NG specialists. (This could change if LNG export facilities in North America are established with a lot of capacity, but don’t hold your breath.)

In my own portfolio, I don’t have any “pure” NG plays. However, XOM and CVX (two companies you mentioned) have gotten into shale gas in a big way. Also, CLB benefits from the increased technological demands imposed by shale drilling (for both NG and liquids). So, all told, I like the exposure my portfolio has to the rising importance of NG.

Blade - Morgan Stanley is bulish on LNG 2014 forward and pricing is much better in the East - japan, china, india, singapore, korea.

you might want to look for some explorers in Indonesia, Australia that will bring supply to market within 2-3 years out.

1. Dart Energy - coalbed methane, LNG
2. CBM Asia - coalbed methane, LNG - shaky finances - altough they just raised some funds, kinda lied about their last webcast ( i sold, depending on equity positions may consider reentering in the future), they do have some connections as they keep expanding their land holdings etc

I would also recommend coal - a canadian coal producer in Mongolia. Exporting coal to Russia and other east markets and also going to export energy/electricity to Mongolia and China, they have over 1.4 billion tonnes of thermal coal reserves - Prophecy Coal. very interesting story, i own it.
