I think markets have a tendency to kill the most that think they know what the markets will do. So the smart thing is to find what the majority expects the markets will do, and do the opposite. :)

Unfortunately timing plays a role too... just ask all the bears that were shorting the bubble since 1998. Ouch! Lots of smart bears lost fortunes on that one... <g>
