...The settlers had spent two long weeks in limbo, waiting for news that the new paperwork for their reduced land holdings wasn't lost in a circular file in some distant federal office.
Tensions were high when a familiar soul wandered into town, hitched his horse to the saloon post, and promptly affixed a shiny new sheriff's badge to his chest.
He glanced around at the second story windows around the street. Each curtain partially hid a dusty head, peeking out at him curiously.
"Name's Silver," he called out to all who could hear. "And I'm the new sheriff in town."
A lone voice echoed from a window high above, "Long time no see, Silver. Ain't heard a peep from you since that nasty EESO business a couple years back."
Silver turned to face the voice and chuckled. "That's old news, son. We got ourselves a fresh prospect here with the Pike. And I hear all kinds of shiny new things are comin' our way."
"Well, that's all fine and dandy, Silver. But we been hearin that same line about shiny stuff for two long years now. And it's kinda lost its luster."
"Well, don't you worry, son. Silver's on the scene now. And I'm here to make a buck or two right along with ya."
