When I lived on the St Pete, FL, I'd drive across to Melbourne/Cocoa Beach area to surf, since there is virtually nothing on the gulf side without a storm in the gulf.. My brother and I were surfing out there and all of a sudden he goes in and sits on the beach, I thought he was just tired and needed a break. I looked in at him and he starts waving me in. Well, I was having fun so I kept surfing, and after catching a wave in I started to paddle back out, and in a wave that was about to break on me, I see a silhouette of a shark (probably only 4 or 5 ft but big enough).. Obviously, I turned back around and headed to shore. He pointed out to me another shark that was swimming in about waist high water that just kept cruising up and down the beach within feet of some swimmers, who I don't think ever saw him..very Jaws-esque. Needless to say, I didn't go back to surf at the Cocoa Beach Pier..although, I did continue surfing on the East Coast of Florida, I found a new spot.
You just don't see sharks like that on the beaches in NC..
