I am not sure that WCDMA couldn't have worked without QCOM...

There were some truth to what DataRox said. When the tide has turned against CDMA2000, due to MENS (mainly NOK), and WCDMA was still plaqued with technical problems due to its convoluted complexities, QCOM engineers had come to the rescue and improving the system; who knows more about CDMA than QCOM and IDCC?
