I don't believe it will go against minute allowance, but you can incur roaming charges, so be aware of roaming. I have national freedom and have not incurred any roaming charges, but you want to make sure how roaming is handled with your plan. By the way, I am really happy with the upgrade to my smart phone. I've had it for 2 months now.
