Dunno, the PCs were only in use 8 hours a day. Why can't windows automatically stop and restart its services in the middle of the night? or Once a week?
I bet a restart of the PC wasn't needed. It's just easier to reboot than to decide what service to fool with.
He had let the problem go for several weeks before asking for help so any sort of automated service management would have plenty of time to trigger before he would be concerned.
